the 4 minute mile barrier was broken twice today..
unbelievable..
i really feel sorry for the bowlers.. this powerplay crap needs to go.. 20 overs of restrictions are just too much.. since they introduced it.. scores have been atleast 300.. and regularly 350.. and only a decade ago… 300 was considered an absolutely secure score..
+ this crap kookaburra ball needs to go too.. we need a ball with a proper seam like dukes..
no seam - no movement.. and it becomes a batsmen feeding frenzy
South Africa chase down 435 to beat Australia
By Will 2 years ago, mid-March Leave a comment on this post
Nothing to add. South Africa have just chased down 435 to win a game of cricket. 434 was the highest score a few hours ago, broken now by South Africa. Andrew Miller’s bulletin will be up soon, so go and read that, the scorecard, and whatever. Ahhh, it’s a great game is cricket!

I am absolutely spewing. I agree with what Asif said, but even still, to fail to defend 434 is just disgraceful.
Australia have been on the wrong end of far too many run chases like that lately.

WHAT A GAME!
A TREAT TO WATCH BOTH TEAMS SCORE 400+
KUDOS TO BOTH TEAMS.
AUSTRALIA IS STILL A STRONG CONTENDER TO WIN THE WORLD CUP BUT WITH WARNE AND MCGRATH OUT,I AM NOT SURE IF THATS POSSIBLE
March 12th, 2006 at 4.33 pm
I sense a DVD of this is a certainty.

I think your post says it all.It was Awesome
March 12th, 2006 at 10.15 pm
I can’t help thiking this has got more coverage than necessary on this site because England again collapsed to spinners and will surely lose to India.
March 13th, 2006 at 12.35 am
Amazing stuff really.
March 13th, 2006 at 5.19 am
It was a batsman’s paradise. The Wanderers has never been quicker, flatter and truer. There was not a cloud in the sky, so the ball didn’t move a whisker. But goodness me, you still have to bat to put 400+ on the board, and to see two teams do it in one day is a privilege, regardless of who they are.
South Africa were lucky to win against a superior Australian side (I’m S’African btw), but I guess sometimes you make your own luck.
Here’s to the magnificent game of cricket, and days like yesterday ![]()

Why didn’t Ponting bowl out Lee’s overs? I didn’t see the game so im wondering if there was some other issue involved other than the fact that Ponting lost his head..
March 13th, 2006 at 10.39 am
Wow, I’m sure i heard a choke or two from the Aussies. I have to doubt that’ll happen again in our lifetime.
March 13th, 2006 at 10.45 am
Firstly the comments about the power plays, i think its brilliant because fans get a more exciting match, the ball deffinately needs to be changed. However the comment that stats south africa won by luck is by far the worst comment in the history of comments, YOU DO NOT CHASE 434 WIN THE GAME WITH 1 BALL TO SPARE AND CALL THAT LUCK you call that a great team effort. south africa should be number 1 and world cup time they will prove it to the whole world.

The greatest game of all
So. South Africa successfully chased down an astonishing 435 to beat Australia, who held the record for a mere few hours. It was an unforgettable day - but was it the greatest game of all?
March 13th, 2006 at 2.18 pm
GODDAMN !!
This game is able to surprise me everytime !! even after watching it for 20-odd years now !

i know cricket is becoming unpredictable which is really great for us fans. the secret i feel of sa getting the total is they play a pro 20 tournament every year for the provincial side so they had some practice in hitting that ball.
March 13th, 2006 at 9.07 pm
One of the greatest game in the history of Oneday Cricket. A lot of records have been broken now. No one ever thought that 434 is a chasable score. Lets trace out the records to be noted in 5th ODI between Australia and South Africa.
Austraila broke Srilanka’s record of 398 runs that was one record.
South Africa chased the score successfully and posted a new record of 438 runs. That was another record in the history of one day internationals cricket.
The very one day ended up with a total of 872 runs, which is another record.
The high score world record set by australian lasted only few hours. this short duration of such a big record is itself another record to be noted. Remember the record of 398 runs by Srilankans lasted for around 10 years.
ML Lewis (australian) is the most expensive bowler of ODI’s history bowling 10 overs and ending up giving 113 runs.
Anyone know the link of that greatest game? i would appreciate if you would post the link. thank you.

SA FAN said: “south africa should be number 1 and world cup time they will prove it to the whole world.”
Oh, really? Perhaps you should be called Nostradamus. Big statements after a win against a side who’d probably taken their foot off the gas after their own phenomenal effort - and only lost four wickets!
March 13th, 2006 at 10.37 pm
oh we do love watchin australia gettin beat
March 13th, 2006 at 10.44 pm
Yes, these vital non-entity fixtures are grand. But personally, I prefer watching SA choke big-time in World Cups and Tests and hand glory to the baggy green Australian caps.
March 14th, 2006 at 5.38 am
The important thing is that Australia’s bowling department continues to look thread-bare when you take out McGrath and Warne. They’ve known this since England beat them in the last Ashes Test played in Sydney. They are still no closer to a solution 3 years later. They’ll be stressed about it.
That guy Lewis gives a new meaning to buffet bowling. He throws pies and eats them.
March 14th, 2006 at 6.23 am
SpryCorpse Whatever makes you sleep at night, the fact is we beat youll and had a ball to spare we hold the highest runs ever scored in one day international. But hey you guys at least got one record yesterday THE MOST EXPENSIVE BOWLER IN THE WORLD.
March 14th, 2006 at 9.51 am
I have never seen someone brag this much after their country wins one ODI series! If South Africa can win the test series then you might be able to make a point.
March 14th, 2006 at 9.58 am
Elliot believe me its because australia is a damn great team and to beat them when they made 434 i mean come on let me have my glory. think about it if austrlia wins the test series you can brag and nail me.

One-day cricket: where is it heading?
The sums are as obscene as those of a CEO’s salary: 595 deliveries for 872
runs, 504 of them, or 58 per cent, in the form of boundaries, including
twenty-six sixes. As Ed Craig observed on Cricinfo, New Wanderers has a bit
of previous, and the absenc…
March 15th, 2006 at 8.47 am
Quite frankly the Aussies choked, and after Warne and Ponting both shooting their mouths off! Quite amusing really…Ponting should just keep quiet and play the game. What a remarkable win and an incredible team effort. Considering South Africa were missing Pollock (probably the best all rounder in ODI’s in the world currently) and Andre Nel that says something about the rather poor Australian side.
It is doubtfull wether the Aussies would have reached the total they did had Pollock and Nel been bowling…and to have lost the big hitting of Pollock at the end of the South African innings and still win that convincingly is quite an achievement.
Everyone is slagging Lewis. Don’t forget Lewis was rated the best death bowler in ODI’s in Australia before he went over to South Africa…this is why Ponting bowled him at the death. Apparently he has performed really well in ODI’s in the Domestic Aussie scene. It was remarkable batting and Aussie choking that should be to blame, not Lewis’s performance.

March 18th, 2006 at 5.58 am
I couldn’t watch the match either live or repeat but when I saw the scoreboard on net ..434..I was like WTF was that???and even more WTF when I scrolled down and saw SA’s score 438..I still couldnt label this match…I am still shocked.
SA was always my best team since 1999 and now they got a good place in the history of ODI.I think this will bring some relief of all the unlucky matches in the past in World cup especially the semi final against Australia in 1999.How can I forget that semi final,it was a disaster…poor SA’cans.Go 4 the world cup now dudes…
Sweet revenge anyways.ENJOY victory dudes!!!!
