Marcus Trescothick’s reasons for leaving India

By Will 2 years ago, at the start of March Leave a comment on this post

    Update March 22, 2008
    Trescothick retires from internationals

    Update November 14 2006
    He’s left the Ashes

Update April 10 2006 He had a virus
In this age of unstoppable news broadcasts, 24/7 programmes and a culture desperate to hear the dirt on anyone remotely famous, the news blackout on Marcus Trescothick’s departure from India has been nothing but welcome.

It’s rare these days for anyone in the public eye not to bear the brunt of a seedy tabloid investigation; Shane Warne is one obvious example, and Ian Botham was perhaps the first cricketer in the modern era to really be exposed for his off-the-field misdoings (or not, whatever).

So although as a cricket fan and wannabe-journalist, I’m itching to know when Trescothick will return - purely for the good of the Test side - I couldn’t care less what his reasons for leaving India are. A tabloid, or someone with a burning desire to know, will no doubt find out soon enough but, for now, it’s a welcome relief from the norm, that a sportsman can get on with his life and deal with his problems in private. Let it remain that way (but let’s also hope whatever it is doesn’t stop him from returning for the one-dayers!)

Same story on the Beeb and cricinfo today. Well said, Will. If the news is that devastating to Tres and his family, for God’s sake, leave them alone. Apparently, reported from many sources, he left the stadium almost in tears. He will be back when he can, of that I have no doubt.

It is, however, an interesting phenonemon. 12 months ago, most of the English population had no idea what most of the English cricket team looked like. Even after the Ashes, it didn’t get that much better, though Freddie was repeated filmed going shopping. This is not the case in Australia (Ponting et al.) or the sub-continent where Tendulkar/ Shohaib can no longer walk the streets in safety. Is English cricket then truly the last bastion of journalistic respect?

I don’t think that it would have stayed secret (even this long) if it had been one of the more well-known and/or colourful members of the team. I think that Tres has escaped this long because frankly, (and this sounds harsh), no-one really cares all that much, bar a few cricket die hards. Would it have stayed quiet if it had been Vaughan or Flintoff? Don’t think so, personally. During the summer, when every man, his wife and her hairdresser were into the cricket, how many pictures did we see of Andrew and Rachel Flintoff, KP and [insert name of minor 'celebrity' here], or Simon Jones compared with Tres? The tabloids are only interested in either the people that they know everyone has heard of, or those who are most likely to provide a couple of column-inches of gossip. Some of them, of course, bring a lot of it on themselves (*cough* Warne *cough*).

Wraye, surely you couldn’t be speaking of the English tabloids as the “last bastion of journalistic respect.” Remember Diana?

Ha! no, no, not the tabloids, Pratik, but cricket. For once, it just nice to see private things stay private. Thank God someone can keep their mouth shut.

What do you get when you combine the lack of coverage on the Trescothick issue with Will’s previous post about cricket craze in India, therefore the constant need for churning out cricket-news for the readers? http://www.telegraphindia.com/1060303/asp/sports/story_5920056.asp

I think that Tres is perceived as being a harmless type who has been England’s most consistent run scorer pretty much since he came into the team and deserves to be left alone. What with Vaughan, Strauss and (almost) Freddie missing tests for births, people have realised that the life of a cricketer is not all roses, and they should not be expected to sacrifice their family for their “country”. Sometimes even cricketers have to get their priorities straight. After Thorpey’s calamitous marriage/cricket collision, perhaps there is a little more sympathy for cricketers, especially as they are basically the opposite of footballers, all but shunning the limelight. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I can’t really picture Hoggy and the King of Spain being busted roasting Chantelle from Big Brother, but I wouldn’t be surprised by Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard doing the same.

if it were in India, we would have had the whole story whether marcus likes it or not…

If he had been “playing away from home” you can guarantee they would have nailed him - on the basis that he’s let England down etc.

Probably the story is too mundane for the papers - ie he’s either trying to patch up his marriage without a third party being involved or his wife needs support for some other unspecified reason.

Because he never gets quoted saying silly things like “you should never desert your team for family reasons” there is no need to turn him over…

I hope Marcus sorts out whatever the problem is. I was trying to guess what it may be. It’s a bit of an old classic to pin it on the domestic issue. Maybe ‘personal reasons’ is a bit of a whitewash. But no more speculation. He’s a damn good batter for England. The blokes who have come into the breach have done great, but Marcus is da man. So huge hugs from us big guy, and all the best for the rest of 2006.

I endorse everything thats been said and rejoice that for once the prurient interest of the tabloids has probably been thwarted more by the reluctance of those who may know whats going on, to talk to the press, than the press not wanting to dish whatever morsels they can speculate on.
Good on his friends and family.Go well Marcus and family

  • andrew wrote:

The Tabloid press will have no doubt found out what the problem is - having worked in the field, there is no way that they wouldn’t have.

The reason they aren’t printing it is that it won’t sell papers - there is no ‘tawdry’ story to tell.

If it was something more along the lines of KP or Warne or whoever getting their end away - it would have been in the papers the very next day, the fact that Banger is ‘boring’ is irrelevent, were Lee Bowyer or Jon Woodgate ‘interesting’ before their scrapping?

Character assassination of anyone (except maybe the queen) is not out of bounds if it will sell a paper.

he will return for good and i hope he solves the problem out its better we leave him alone for sometime. ENGLAND is incomplete without him ’cause hes a fantastic opener and i hope does well throughout 2006. CHEERS !!

TRESCO is perhaps the most consistent batsman in da english team you never would’ve seen him not playing a game ,wether against a weak side or a strong side so u cannot say that he has let england down .The bottomline is that “he had to return at the wrong time when the skipper wasn’t in the team as well”

To be a celebrity usually means you have to want to be a celebrity. In trescothic’s case he plays down his personal life where KP obiusly enjoys being in the limelight.

“Is English cricket then truly the last bastion of journalistic respect?”

Wray given that the english first started playing the game (even though it is said that early versions were first played in France) doesn’t mean that the way cricket is played in England or by England is the right way. Therefore it sounds kind of pompous when I noticed the above quote.

In fact the past has shown that the way cricket has been played in england and by england means that at points they lost a lot respect - journalistic and otherwise.

I stumbled across this page having come in this morning half way through a discussion between the commentators about tres and personal reasons and wondering who had actually said what. Reading the stuff about a virus, it reminded me of a colleague who returned home years ago after having a breakdown which sounded a bit similar and which was eventually put down to side effects of the anti-malarial drug larium - which tres would probably be taking in india. I don’t much care if this is the correct explanation or not - whatever the cause it’s obviously not an easy time for him, and I think it’s entirely his business. The point is that if this were the cause it may be that he didn’t know himself at the time, the symptoms are a bit flu-like, and the tabloids would not give enough space to actually explain the issue.

I have a very close friend who knows Marcus and his family and I can categorically state that he and his family are fine and he will be available to play for the start of the Somerset season. The reasons for his leaving the India tour are his own and if he wasn’t in the public eye no one would care anyway. I think everyone should just butt out and give him some space. Come on let’s talk about some real gossip…Pieterson…who’s he dating now?

That is a lie…the truth is that Pietersen slept with his wife and now Marcus finds it impossible to share the dressing room with him.

I reckon i have the real truth right here and it comes from a friend of mine who works in a barbers. One day Darren Gough strolled in for a haircut and announced tht the real reason Tres isnt playing for England is because Micheal Vaughan has slept with his wife. Thts genuine word from inside of the england team itself, Goughy does not lie.

I’ve heard that he is shagging Michael Vaughan’s missus. This started about the time of Ashes 2005 and if you look at it since then, have they ever played together??? Very interesting but heard from a very good source!!!!

Look at the stats, the answer lies there I reckon. Look at the timing of Trescothicks return…Vaughan dumoed by selectors, Trescothick suddenly returns for one day cricket…NOT tests….makes more sense now.

I shouldn’t come on here and say this but Tresco’s mrs was shagging Kevin Shine. Shine was coach at sommerset and got to know resco’s mrs and when he was away with england Shine used to get friendly.

Also since it happened Shine although being contracted by the ECB as a bowling coach has slipped away from the scene with no real reason and Alan Donald has been brought in.

    Fishy hey!

And apparently they thought Shine would be better suited to work with the academy or some crap.

See theer you go, dont know if its already on the net but thats what happened.

This is all what I have heard and is not necessarily true im just saying what ive been told
