India v England, 1st Test, Nagpur, Day Five

By Will 2 years ago, at the start of March Leave a comment on this post

(Day one comments | Day two | Day three | Day four)

    England 393 and 297 for 3 (Cook 104*, Collingwood 36*) lead India 323 (Kaif 91, Hoggard 6-57) by 367 runs

Who can believe it? England are on top. Alastair Cook, a debutant, is unbeaten on 104. Truly a funny game, this cricket thing. Shall attempt to get up even earlier tomorrow, although I’m expecting a draw. Chat away!

Morniing all, so Freddie has declared and India face a massive total to chase. Can we bowl them out for a win? Go, Hoggy, go!

Hooooooooweeee! Hoggy bowls Sehwag! What a brilliant start. How I love that lad!

    england must win this..
would be the best start possible to this series..
not going for the kill by scoring at 20/20 rate on the 4th day might come back to haunt them..
when there’s even a slight chance for the kill on the subcontinent.. you must take it..

Asif, you have a point but whatever happens today, the second Test will be really interesting. England were written off before this Test started and look at us now. India have had a big wake-up call. The attack will really be on next game.

With Hoggers getting Sehwag, out thinking him by putting KP(?) as the man on the drive and packing the offside with all the players and then nipping one INTo him and taking his off stick off! Brilliant!

Dravid and Jaffers now need to shore up and play out atleast a session and a half for a draw, at the same time keeping the scorers busy withe 1s, 2s and the odd 4s.

Good positive declaration by Freddie. Good on ya, Freddie. A ‘nothing’ team works itself on top.

    A good test match, better.

Hurrah - Monty’s going round the wicket - Will wil be pleased.

Sounds like there have been a few half chances and a drop from Jones - on such slender threads…….

how about that missed run out by sub prior..

  • Sean wrote:

Indeed - probably the best chance of a wicket this session.

Hello - what’s going on here? Are the Indians going for a win?

can you blame them? Pathan really going for it with a huge 6!

It is good thinking - force Fred to use the seamers when he wanted to rest them four days before Mohali. Even if they don’t win they can claim psychological high ground. And surely they can’t lose………

and Jaffer has gone! Thanks be for that. India are keeping up with the runrate. Should be intersting now. I fell asleep this morning.

    Hi Jess!

With Dhoni gone, they’ve promoted the Turbinator. Blimey. If we can just get Sachin out, we should be safe. But are England going to be told off for the slow over rate?

    6 down…

Any news on KP’s sore arm?

And now they’ve been offered the light. Moral high ground to India methinks.

Only just joined it - heard two wickets fall and then a draw. Oh well.

England should be pretty pleased I reckon. Scored more in both innings, and in that second innings there were only three extras against their bowling! At least we’ve given India something to think about which is a lot more than I expected before the start, and especially after day 1!

    Role on the next test!

KP had a X-ray and all is OK. It is so weird for the game to end just like that, then I get the Archers on the radio. Weird. Oh well, back to bed for me, I suppose.

india showed a lot of fight…
maybe if england had done the same… by playing aggressively on day 4… they might have had more time to bowl out the indians..
declaring after playing slowly for only 3 wickets.. what was the point of all those wickets that they didn’t use..
they should have gone on full attack.. and taken the fight to the indians.. defensive play is only going to result in draws or indian wins..
going at 20/20 rate on day 4 would have sent a strong message to the indians that england are here to win..
this excuse of.. oh draw is good.. ’cause we didn’t have our main players.. that’s rubbish.. on day 4 you had your chance to push for a win.. and you didn’t take it..
what is the goal for england? go for 3 drawn tests and take that as a win?

Hi Asif, sounds as if you actually wanted to see England win! But we gave India a good run. We had our excuses over and done with before a ball was bowled. The team was in a mess, new captain and 2 debutants in Monty and Cook. And they shaped up well. Now I turn your question back to you - where was the might of India? The great Sehwag scored exactly 2 in 2 innings. The Tubinator only took 2 wickets.

All things considered, yes, England are happy with the draw.

It certainly seems that the pommies were gonna be satisfied with only a draw…even if a win was there for the asking….

All excuses and absentees apart, the fact is that they could have forced the issue on the 4th day and actually won this match…..but it seems like there was some unwritten rule that said england should not win a match without tresco, vaughan and co. and the players looked to dutifully follow that.

This was a chance that they may not get again…..gotta grab those if you want to be the top test team.

An excellent performance by england, but definetly an opportunity lost.
