It’s gone for a maximum

By Will 4 years ago, at the start of March Add your comment below

Bloody one-day cricket. It’s ruining commentators. No sooner has Mike Atherton shamed his colleagues with an effortless and elegant description of a boundary (“Languidly stroked for four”) than another screams “Oooh oh, it’s gone for a maximum”. I hate that expression. What’s wrong with “It’s gone for six”? Pah.c

I personally hate the 2 phrases “put their hands up” and “come to the party”. I understand they originate from OZ. This explains much.

I also have deep worries that the Beeb are transfering TMS to Radio 5 live and the Age of the Classic Commentator will be no more – for example, who the hell is Arlo White? I am sure he is a nice guy, but knows bugger all on cricket. Also Jo White is certainly a nice person but she’s missed a few byes and a bit slow on the stats. Where is the Bearded Wonder? (Working for the Times at home, that’s where)

Damn, Aunty Beeb must be desperate to save money.

I don’t think that they’ll ever transfer TMS completely to 5Live, because of the necessity to have LW capability. I think that the attempt to modernise it (if that’s the right word) with people who are slightly less, shall we say, ‘classical’ than Blowers et al. has a lot to do with the fact that a lot of people I know (all in the 20-30 age bracket) find him incredibly irritating to listen to, and actually prefer the likes of Arlo White and Simon Mann. So you keep the likes of Vic Marks, CMJ and Mike Selvey (and Aggers, of course) who actually know what they’re talking about, and add in a couple of pure commentators who have the smooth patter.

And I like Jo King, if only cos she’s a woman, a species not often seen in the TMS commentary box…

Don’t get me wrong, I like Jo King too – she did a fine job at C4 – and applaud the presence of a woman in the TMS box, just wish she had her act and stats together a bit more.

Showing my age here – don’t want smooth patter in the cricket, want insanity, poetry and the score on a regular basis. No chance of voodoo and getting Arlott back then?

Oh, I completely agree! I was just hypothesising…

Another bit of aussie phrasing which really annoys me is fieldsman and batter. Surely it should be batsman and fielder.

They have everything else upside down. Why not compound nouns as well?
