I’m posting this in advance, just - well because. England are in a bit of a mess; India less so. Chat away!

Well, off we go … Freddy won the toss and we’re batting first, Cook opening with Strauss. The first few balls have been rubbish, and the outfield is quick … and we have the first boundaries! Wheeeeee! 22 off the first 15 minutes.

Hi Jess, having a cup of tea here, almost fully awake. How you’re doing?
March 1st, 2006 at 4.50 am
Bloody freezing, actually. Which is ironic seeing as I’ve just got back from holiday in a cold place. Having my first decent cup of tea in a week and a half.

How I would love to be in India now and feel that sun warming my bones. It has snowed here for 4 days running. So glad we are batting first. The fielding doesn’t seem too good at the moment, hopefully it will get worse.
Where did you go then?
March 1st, 2006 at 5.00 am
England moving at a choppy pace of 6.39rpo after 5 overs. Sreesanth and Pathan feeling the ist day jitters!!! Cook & Straus going steady.

Austria, skiing. Very nice - not too cold. Just right.
Run-rate of 6/over? That’s really quite funny.
March 1st, 2006 at 5.15 am
England 45/0 (8.3 ov)
India
England RR: 5.29
Cook’s taken the attacking role while Strauss setting up shop. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kumble come on with his top-spinners around the 12th over, IF Sreesanth and Pathan don’t get atleast one wicket.

Very nice, Jess, but know what you mean about continental tea ![]()
According to Cricinfo, we are now down to a run rate of 5.3 and the Turbinator comes in to bowl. Just how many no-balls did Pathan send down? Can he please bowl some more?

Wahhhh! Strauss caught Laxman at 2nd slip during the shipping forecast. Typical.

Morning Gang
Adjusting to my first test without sky sports (sniff) - sounds like Cook’s made a decent start. 72-1 as I type.
March 1st, 2006 at 6.12 am
He’s been lucky though, the bowling and fielding has been nothing special yet.
I’m listening on an old radio, no free Internet live commentary. Transmission from London keeps breaking down - how annoying.

Oh Blow - another wicket.
March 1st, 2006 at 7.57 am
and Plonker Pietersen manages to get himself out. Oh dear. Did the haircut take his strength?

So…where is this one heading? England not playing spinners very well…and this is day 1.
Although Cook looked confident, Bhajji didn’t test him well enough going around the wicket.

i hope cook gets a hundred on debut..
March 1st, 2006 at 8.39 am
No such luck…

This is my first comment since the tests against Pakistan, but I’m sure it won’t be my last. I can’t work out how to get the radio on the computer here at my new job, so it’s cricinfo all the way for me. Thankfully it hasn’t been crashed by all of India watching too. Seemingly my dream last night of Cook taking a century and England all out for 320 didn’t come true, but I think I might be near enough. Any predictions?

Nice partnership between Colly and Fred…just when it was needed.
March 1st, 2006 at 10.23 am
oh bugger, and there goes Fred LBW!
March 1st, 2006 at 10.30 am
Ahh…relief. Fred firing with Collingwood, Jones and Blackwell could have got England to safety.
But anyway, his return to decent touch is good for England.
March 1st, 2006 at 10.54 am
Munch nails - now let’s see what Pathan does with the new ball.
Right Worma, lovely to see Fred on form but another 50 on his score would have been better!
… ooooh dear …
March 1st, 2006 at 10.58 am
But his form is vital for the series (maybe even later in this match)
BBC says(writes) both Fred and Jones were dubious decisions. Is that so? Someone watching?
March 1st, 2006 at 11.33 am
According to the Guardian written commentary and TMS, replays suggest the ball that got Flintoff was going down the leg side.

Opportunity knocks
It might not all be doom and gloom for England, despite a disasterous start to their tour of India. Dan Jellinek investigates further

I watched the highlights after coming back from college.
The ball that Fred got might or might not have hit leg stump, he was some way down the pitch too. You could say he was some what unlucky but I’d not say they same for Jones, who was stuck in his crease, plumb in front, it was one of those really close pad first bat later ones. I personally thought this was an excellent decesion and Nass/Athers/Srikanth/Amernath all agreed.
So didn’t-touch-wood still not out, I see. And Shrek Stone waller out with him, so…England might get to 300 if they’re lucky, but otherwise, India should wrap this up by around 270 odd.
