Flintoff to captain England

By Will 4 years ago, at the end of February Add your comment below

According to reports, Andrew Flintoff is in line to captain England in the first Test at Nagpur on Wednesday, assuming both Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick are unable to attend to their usual duties. I find this quite surprising, not to mention a great shame.

Flintoff has a good cricket brain. I don’t think anyone can doubt that someone who bowls as cleverly as he does, and who bats (now) so sensibly, doesn’t understand the game very well. However, Flintoff isn’t simply another member of the team; he is the team. The addition of captaincy will, like it has affected most English captains in recent years, ruin one or both of his skills. I’m certain it’s not a long-term plan, but given his importance to the side as a bowler and batsman, why burden him now? Why not Andrew Strauss?

i think Flintoff can be very good captain for england .being a very good all rounder, can lead his side from the front.flintoff seems a have very good cricketing brain and has come a long way since he emerged on the international arena. He will make a very good captain for england in future.

I see where you atre coming from, but if it’s only for one terst it can’t be too much of a problem. Plus Flintoff has ambitions to be a future captain, so he can see what he’s in for.

    Confused from Bonn answers:

well said, Nagraj. But operant words are “in future”. Not now. Flintoff is a good, perhaps time after the Ashes will show us a great player, but not Wednesday. he wants to leave to attend the birth of his second child. The captaincy will practically force him to stay, which will split his emotions and render him weaker. Strauss captained Middlesex well for 2 seasons, it matured the man.
Neither of them are performing well at the moment, but I would rather have some consistency and let Strauss take the ropes if need be …

whatever, I have a bad feeling about this tour. Veeeeery bad feeling indeed.

Will…whatever happens….just remember that Flintoff has already been in a pretty ordinary batting form of late. Don’t go blaming that on his captaincy (if he does get it) :-)

India v England 2006: Flintoff for Captain?

In my post -India v England 2006: England in all sorts with 4 days to T1, I commented: Who would captain, should Tresco not be back by T1 and Vaughan needs to sit out due to his knee problems? Can’t…

i agree with Will. i’m certain it will get in the way of his batting and bowling, but he is being groomed to be the next England captain, maybe he can get a taste of captaincy and learn from it and adopt and improve his game around it. he certainly is strong enough to.

I just heard on the news that Michael Vaughan has flown home to England as well!!!
Is this true? If so, it sucks to be English :P

Not that an Aussie can really talk, we have been having our own case of injury woes on the South African Tour! Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds and Stuart Clark are all injured leaving a squad of only 11 fit players that lost to South Arica last night! Phil Jacques if flying over there in the next few days!

The team that looked so together during the Ashes is falling apart and, barring a miracle, the nosedive is set to continue in India. India is possibly the toughest tour of the lot, and without a settled and mentally strong team, it will be virtually impossible to win this series, or even stave off a whitewash. The effect of this much disruption in the lead up to a Test Match will have the Indians rubbing their hands with anticipation – imagine the effect on England if Australia lost Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden and Glenn McGrath in the lead up to an Ashes Test? I fear for Michael Vaughan’s career with this latest injury, as he looks to be out for the entire tour, and Tresco’s mysterious return home is another big blow. Now I read this morning that Simon Jones has injured his left knee during training. Are we rapidly nosediving back to the bad old days when sides full of ringers were forced to take on the Aussies at the peak of their powers? And why didn’t Strauss get the captaincy? Flintoff is our most important player and already intends to fly home during the tour to be at the birth of his second child – that means that there will be at least one more change in the captaincy during the tour – why not get him to open the batting whilst we’re at it?!

I think Freddie will make a great captain but whoever captains the side am sure this unfit England squad will lose 3-0.

You think the Indians are rubbing their hands with anticipation, us aussies are loving it! :P
Although you will probly be fully fit come November!

I agree with the people who are saying Flintoff shouldn’t captain. MOST peoples personal performances seen to drop a bit when they are given the captiancy, even if it is only for one tour. The only person i can think of right now whos performances got better once granted the captaincy of his side, and thats Ricky Ponting!
And with Flintoff such an important player in the team ( well whats left of it ), you cant his performances being burdend by the extra wheight on his shoulders that the captaincy would bring.

england strategy for the remainder of the series: bowl outisde leg stump and move it further away. permanent leg slip in place.

    Elliot,

Inzi has been in top notch for with the bat (mostly) since he took over as captain.

Nasser Hussain is in favour of Freddie as captain (for what that’s worth). He thinks it was a cunning plan by Duncan Fletcher to make sure Freddie doesn’t fly home for the birth of his 2nd child. Sounds about right…

But I agree; captaincy has never improved recent England captain’s batting. Quite the opposite, in fact.
