Beware Pakistan!

By Scott 4 years ago, at the start of February Add your comment below

Mark Waugh is looking ahead to the 2007 World Cup, and he isn’t impressed with South Africa or Sri Lanka. He thinks that the big danger to Australia completing a hat-trick of titles is Pakistan.

True enough, but it’s 12 months to go and Pakistan are.. well.. changable. Which Pakistan will turn up? I agree that if Pakistan are playing to their full potential, they could win the title. And I’m surprised that Waugh doesn’t even mention England.

And I so hope that they get rid of the ‘power play’ and ’supersub’ nonsense at the end of this summer. I do not like these new rules. The ‘power play’ is almost always taken straight away, and the ’supersub’ gives far too much advantage to the side that wins the toss.

Of course we are the bigger danger, unlike Sri Lanka we don’t struggle away from home, and unlike South Africa we don’t’ choke in big tournaments, so we were always going to the bigger threat. :D

Seriously speaking though, I have a very good feeling about this Pakistani side, it is very different to the past ones, very united. I also doubt you’ll see a whole lot of changes between now and 12 months later, the management has settled down a lot, and the selectors don’t adopt a horses for courses policy now-a-days as much as they use to in the past.

I’m also not surprised that Mark Waugh hasn’t even mentioned England, frankly I don’t understand why people rate England’s one-day side so highly. I can’t even remember the last time England won a one-day tournament of note!

pakistan is the only team that will challenge australia..
but winning it for pk is going to be almost impossible..
the fielding of pak and noballs etc will let them down..
if they could even field 50% as good as the aussies then they might have an outside chance..
the best chance for pak winning is not facing the aussies in the final.. they have a better chance against them in a semi final..
or the best chance would be for the aussies to be some how defeated by somebody else in the semis..
aussie vs pak in a final.. australia will win..

Well, Zainub, the thing is, the English are good when they put their minds to something- for example, the Ashes.

And I think they are going to attack the tournament pretty darn hard.

On current form, it is hard to see anyone coming close to the aussies. The way they approach games with such competetiveness, even when they are ‘not important’, is downright scary. I would like to see them seriously challenged – I think World cricket needs it, but there is a long way to go.

Australia’s bowling is the weak link. McGrath and Lee are bankers, Hogg and Symonds can ‘do a job’ with the ball, but the real weakness is the second string seamers. Dory, Clark, Watson, Bracken, etc have been either injured or getting slaughtered. We’ve got a depth problem there.

Tonight, for example, the Saffies got 287. Not so long ago, we couldn’t stop the Kiwis scoring 300 twice in a row. We’ve got problems there.
