South Africa took the honours on the first day with a committed and pretty slick performance. Can they maintain it though for the remaining days? Chat away!

oh, please boys! Hussey started the day on 23 and he is still there. Stil there.

I remember when he was playing for Durham early in 2005 against my home county Leicestershire. He just went on and on … double century. Gulp.

Get McGrath on strike and bowl him out quick, please!!!!

Glenn McGrath is my batting hero. I wish that my batting hero could be KP or Graeme Smith or Rahul Dravid, but my aspirations are quite limited by the reality of my skill level. So hats off to to the Aussie last man for holding up his end of a fifty partnership. As I write this it’s 67 runs, and he’s contributed 4!

Does anyone know what the most lopsided partnership (measured by difference in runs between the partners) in test cricket was?

Obviously a question only the great Bearders can answer. Let’s ask him!

Bearders never answers my questions, but I did send it on just now.

A couple related questions I’ve pondered:
What was the highest partnership in which one of the partners did not face a ball?
What was the highest scoring partnership in which one of the partners scored 0?

BTW, as I write this McGrath is at 10 and the partnership is 96 at lunch.

Final partnership: 107, with 11 (not out!) from McGrath. That’s a difference of 96. Maybe there are some really large partnerships where the difference is greater than 96, but they’d be closer percentage-wise (e.g. a 300 partnership where 1 batsmen contributes 90). It must be some sort of test record, though, for the lowest contribution to a century partnership.

This could be McGrath’s finest hour with the bat, even though he did once score 61 vs. NZ. He survived 56 deliveries after the previous 5 batsmen combined lasted for only 49, and we’ll never know how much longer he could have lasted.

What a sport! You never know what can happen. It must have been excruciating to watch for S.A. fans.

This test has been amazing so far!! Ponting is a legend ( and a TASMANIAN too! ;) )
Hussy batted surpurbly this morning. i was sitting just around the fence a bit where he hit the 2 sixs in consecutive balls!
The NEW MCG looks great. Only thing that worrys me is that there are alreadys signs advertising next years Ashes!!! :|
Lookin forward to another great days cricket tomorow! Australia really needs a couple of early wickets because if Kallis gets away the day could turn Ugly! I think Stuart MaGill was under bowled again today. espisally when we wern’t getting any wickets. But overall this test has been set up for a great finish!

another great test match.. beautifully poised.. My money on a kallis century… and a victory for SA.

    Right then, Alan.

McGraths 11* is the second lowest contribution to a Test 3-figure (in this case 107) partnership.

In first place are Fernando (1) and Jayasuria (253)for a 9th wicket partnership stand of 101, Sri Lanka vs Pakistan in Faisalabad 2004/05.

Thanks, Wraye. I guess you’re the “beardless wonder”. :-)

Wow! Compared to Fernando, McGrath is a scoring machine! Gotta figure in that innings Fernando must have accidentally edged a ball through the slips cordon to get his 1. I can’t imagine he actually swung the bat.

I think, I hope we are gonna get some further stats on this question because it really reflects on the efforts of the batsmen. Some stats - and okay, as a scorer I love ‘em, mean nothing to no-one except other anoraks. But Alan had a great point, it was a great innings and really counted for something which is a case where the stats do have some real meaning. Glad to have helped, Alan.

Well, the Aussies win again. Nine and a half days to extract a win from the tough South Africans. Glad to see Symonds have a great day yesterday - he’s too good a cricket talent to leave the Test arena without a few memorable performances behind him. Hayden, Ponting and Warne the usual high quality performances. Hussey the new star in town. Hodge impressive but a few things still to learn. Ponting is an amazing cricketer. He’ll eventually, inevitably, be recorded as one of the best batsmen of all time - not so often mentioned is the fact that he must be one of the best handful of fielders ever to have graced the game. And, to me, there is little wrong with his captaincy - he was bagged primarily because England played a great Ashes series and Ponting’s teammates didn’t come to the party as they might have. Can’t wait for next summer! :-)

well said spry. I love watching ponting in at ’silly mid-off’. He’s got to have some of the best reflexes out of anyone in the world playing any sport.
