Pakistan v England, 3rd Test, Lahore, 4th day

By Will 3 years ago, at the start of December Leave a comment on this post

It’s all going a bit wrong for England, isn’t it? Akmal played very well though yesterday - although I can’t help feeling England looked flat, again. The penultimate day of the last Test of a momentus year for English cricket is upon us - chat away with zeal and splendour!

Morning, guys . . . I’ve given up thinking about the cricket. Jess, what are you studying? What’s your thesis on?

Pakistan did well yesterday, by the sounds of it, and it seems England’s batsmen are to blame for our position. I like Agger’s comments on BBC. Thinking about the six-day tests - it sounded a good idea, but then, look where we are here. Pakistan look like winning a 3-test series 2-0, against a not bad side. You could easily get fewer results in a test series in Aust or England.

Go Vaughany. Have a go yourself - it couldn’t be any worse, and then we will all know that the fat lady has sung . . . although I still hold out hope of that double century!

yes.. jess… loads of problems accessing the site.. very slow, formatting messed up, no page coming up etc..
i’ve been reading england media sites and it all seems to be harsh words for the english team as if they’re losing to kenya. pk is not that bad a team to lose to!

Hi all, I too had a lots of problems with the website early this morning.
Mani, that is typical of the stupid English press for you - if you win, there’s praise to the skies but if you loose, they will tear you to pieces. The cricket team has always been a popular victim.

I’ve got into the site with no probs this morning so maybe things are fixed. I’d just like to say that I don’t think England have played badly. I think the bowlers have been supreme in very testing conditions, especially Harmy, who had the least just 1-150 odd one could imagine. He bowled with vigour, venom and passion, and this for someone who is normally accused of being at home in his head when on tour. OK, the batsmen have been erratic, but this is really no different to the Ashes. Obviously consistency needs to be sorted out, but I have faith that most of the batsmen have it in them to develop that before next winter.

All credit really must go to Pakistan. They have played this series with the attitude of a team who are going for the victory, despite their groundsmen doing their best to prepare pitches destined for draws. Well done, and we’ll see how they do in England next summer.

    I predict 2-0 to England.

For you fans abroad, radio 4 LW broadcasts our daily prayers during the tea break. I am sorry, but I had to laugh out loud at the first hymn, obviously dedicated to the England team.
It was “He who would valiant be, ‘gainst all disaster”.

Instead of the limerick competition, perhaps we should have the most relevent biblical reference or hymn, for England’s current predicament. There must be plenty of quotes about unrealistic hope amid impending doom.

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide (and the wickets)
The darkness deepens (but no fast enough for the English batsmen . . .)

    You get the idea . . .

    Chris,

The groundsmen only prepare the kind of pitches the captain, coach, and the rest of the cricket board ask him to make! A flat surface gives Pakistan the best shot at victory against a side like England. If we had anything with even just the little bit of proper incentive for the quick bowlers our batting would have collapsed like nine pins (wait till we get in England and you’ll see what I mean).

I’ve just got a word or two on Ting Ting, I gave that boy a hard time, called him over rated, this, that, but he’s the one player in this series for whom my respect and admiration has increased with every match. I didn’t agree with Stewet before, but I do now. This lad will get 5000 test runs at least, and KP won’t. I fully expect Bell to be not out at 130 odd not out (of 240 odd ball) at the end of the England innings tomorrow when we win by innings and an inconsequential number of runs just after tea. Can’t see England managing to keep their last 8 intact tomorrow, 75 overs is a lot of time to bat on a last day surface against a bowling attack that will have it’s tails up. We should win.

What the hell happened? Last I checked Bell and Collingwood had batted off the morning session (that’s three sessions that they staved off a dismissal — a commendable job), and with truncated play expected, England looked on target for a draw. I visit Cricinfo an hour later and the headline read, “England in tatters.” This is unbelievable.

I know. I’ve been listening to it on the radio. Kaneria had 3-0 in 3 overs after lunch at one stage. Very unlucky not to get his hat trick (not surprisingly Darell Hair turning down the appeal).

From then Shoaib’s slower ball took over. Jones and Plunkett were unlucky but the key wicket of Bell was plumb.

The Shoaib/Kaneria tandem has established itself as a worthy heir of Imran/Qadir and Waqar,Wasim/Mushy.

What happened? Shoaib and Kaneria had a mystery lunch, and the rest, they say is history. The chef should be given a special bonous! :D

Superb bowling by Shoaib and Kaneria! They were unplayable on a wicket that offered them nothing.

Unsurprisingly, all the English fans here have gone into hinding! Now, who will I gloat to?

    where’s the 5th day post?
zainub.. i don’t think the english fans have gone in to hiding.. i think the site problems have kept them away.. very slow today.. errors etc..
what a performance by pakistan.. i have to tell you zainub.. i read your post about a victory and i wanted to agree but i was skeptical… after lunch i had almost given up hope.. i was watching two channels on the telly with the cricket on mute.. and then kaneria made a break through.. it was then that i felt that now we have a chance..
the next hour was like a hot knife through butter..
i have never seen pk attack the opposition with this intensity.. great stuff by the pakistanis

I hadn’t lost hope before Lunch, I knew one wicket could make all the difference but a capitualtion like this was never on my mind - I expected more a grinding, hard working last minute win, with England just managing to lose their last wicket in fading light! But Shoaib and Kaneria had other plans. And boy am I happy those plans worked!

This is the stuff of legends, I gloat on about this forever, to my children, and grand childen and great grand children if I live to see them. Quite simply amazing.

what are your predictions for the india test series zany? do you think akthar and company can keep working this hard? will this win go to their head resulting in complacency.. just like the england confidence of beating pk 3-0 after the ashes win..

  • Zainub - Zany wrote:

I’m positively optimistic Mani, we should give them a good run for their money. I don’t like predicting exact series scores (just another naive superstition of mine) but it should be very exciting. I don’t think we’ll get complacent or anything, you can’t, not against India. Too much at stake.
