Pakistan v England, 3rd Test, Lahore, 3rd day

By Will 3 years ago, at the start of December Leave a comment on this post

The third day of the third Test - a day which is oft said to be the most crucial in a Test. That being the case, tomorrow might well be the turning point of the series. Crack on, chat away, and amuse yourselves with great gusto! Splendid

Will, are you getting a case of the “Blowers” this morning? :)

Morning, Mani! Inzy should bat, have heard he has only bruising, no break in his arm. Radio reception is really poor this morning. Bite nails, drink tea. Oh my, we need some wickets.

How difficult can it be to get Shoaib Akhtar out? Really?

  • Mani wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 5.51 am

jess.. normally just a few balls.. because akhtar goes for sixes from ball no1
but recently he has been trying to stay in longer and defend
he’s not wearing an arm guard which is worrying for me.. another harmy blow to the wrist for pk would be disastrous

  • Mani wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 5.52 am

then again if he was to wear one it would be on his left arm.. so it wouldn’t help..

  • Jess wrote:

Boycs was going on about lower-order batsmen wearing armguards yesterday, when Plunkett was batting. No-one wants to see people getting hurt, particularly bowlers who obviously have a more important things to do…

222 for 4 - a Nelson! We are surely due a wicket soon!
Not in your duvet this morning, Jess? :)

Not so cold this morning, Wraye. Windy, instead.

    Nice ton up for Yousuf.

  • Wraye wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 6.19 am

Well played, Yousuf. Bit of a bummer for England, but credit where it is due. Looks like Inzy might not play after all, bruising seems to be worse than previously thought. Either that, or it’s a ploy so he can come in later and support the bunnies. Who knows?

Just what on earth is Shoaib up to? Doing a Harmy or what?

Very mild in Bonn too. I have even turned the heating off and opened a window, though my cold is at the multiple aspirin, honey & lemon and 3 packs of tissues an hour stage.

  • Wraye wrote:

wheeeeee! and Plunky gets Shoaib out! Lovely! caught Udal. There goes a thorn in our side.

  • Jess wrote:

Yeah! Knew something would happen if I went for a shower.

Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, Wraye. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Jess. I have to commute to work, so I tend to catch all the bugs. It took an age to get here this morning.

And Yousuf is still bloody in! And the run rate is increasing. Oh dear.

    caroline.. he’s probably really tired..
he has bowled more overs in this series than anyone else in both the teams

I heard something about him maybe having picked up a bug of some kind. Can’t remember where - maybe TMS.

Maybe if I go into work, we’ll get a wicket…worked a treat last time

  • Wraye wrote:

no idea. I’m in the office and missing a lot of it. Yesterday, Harmy and Vaughen were both limping. Harmy due to the footholes - so they said and Vaughen’s knee is still not right. You Aussies must be loving this ;)

  • Wraye wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 9.50 am

What’s this? KP warming up for a bowl???? Vaughen must be desperate.
I hope Sophie, Monique and Co have a spare set of dry underwear. ;)

Hello folks. Is anyone else having trouble with the ball-by-ball coverage on Cricinfo?

  • dave_v wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 9.58 am

    KP bowling? why not.

Just got into work, clicked on Cricinfo, didn’t initally see the score, just that Bell was bowling, knew it must be bad. Well played the Pakistani batsman but it just looks like the England bowlers have had enough on this dead track. I think this series is effectively all over.

Can’t believe Woolmer said in a Sky interview last night that his is a bowlers pitch!

  • dave_v wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 10.00 am

Out of interest has anyone brought the live commentary from CricInfo? What’s it like? Who’s on it?

  • Wraye wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 10.08 am

The lines from Pakistan keep breaking down, that could be part of cricinfo’s problem and there are a load of Indian games on - overload in the system as millions of fans tune in.
No idea about the CI commentary but they are usually good.

Get this - breaking news. The ICC are prepared to consider 6-day Tests in Pakistan, given the recent loss of overs to bad light. The idea of the ICC being reasonable almost beggars belief, but it is not going to help England now, is it?

  • Christopher wrote:

I don’t know why vaughan doesn’t bowl himself. I’ve still got memories of him bamboozling Sachin. He could at least give the ball a bit more shape than poor Udal.

I wonder whether Simon Jones would really have got any reverse swing in Pakistan. Freddie was reversing it at will in the summer, but its barely moving now. Perhaps India will be different………..

  • dave_v wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 10.28 am

Do you think they’ll stick with Udal for India?

  • Christopher wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 10.34 am

They might as well try Loudon. He can’t be worse than Udal. He’s young, supposedly has a doosra, and did used to be something of a batting prodigy.

  • Jess wrote:

Jess, is my hotel room ready? I’d like to move in now, please :(

Boycs mentioned earlier that the Kookaburra ball doesn’t turn as much as a Reader ball (as used in the UK). I’ve never used a Kookaburra. Any theories, anyone?

  • Zainub - Zany wrote:

Can some one do me a favor and get Beefy out of the commentary box? Please!

His constant pitch this pitch that rant is so annoying. These very pitches have enabled Pakistan to be 1-0 up in the seires against what some think is the best side in the world, and we’re looking good to go 2-0 up, and if all went our way we could have been 3-0 up!

We’re the home side, we will make flat wickets because it suits our team, if Beefy thinks it makes for dull cricket (which is barking mad IMHO) then he might as well keep saying it for the rest of his life, and it wouldn’t change.

No point about complaining about the pitches, the England quicks have done wonderfully well on these very flat wickets, Harmison has been superb in this innings and generally people have been very good, if Giles was fully fit or they had another half decent spinner unlike Udal or if the English batsmen showed just the little bit more sense then they have, then England wouldn’t be in the position they are now. No point in blaming the pitch. It’s not the pitches fault, it is their fault.

Send Beefy back to England, tomorrow on the same plane as Giles. I can’t stand his commentary any more.

  • Jess wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 11.03 am

Zany, I never could stand his commentary, which is why I had TMS on even when I was watching the 2nd test on Sky. Man’s a moron, no doubt about it.

  • Zainub - Zany wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 11.08 am

Thank God you think that way, no I don’t have to feel guilty about it ;)

    Anyway, brilliant day, isn’t it?

Kamrani looking good for his 2nd ton. And Yousuf for his double ton. Looks like Inzi wouldn’t be needed to bat at all!

  • Wraye wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 11.15 am

Hi Zany! credit where it is due, Pakistan are playing very well.
I heard Beefy made a complete fool of himself at Faisalabad by showing his lack of knowledge of the Laws. Would have loved to have heard that one! Couldn’t stand being stuck with the Sky commentary team.

P.S. nice piece in cricinfo :)

  • dave_v wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 11.24 am

Botham sums up the entire Sky coverage.

One thing however, Harmison hasn’t bowled flat out all series, just within himself in a containing role. Whereas on the Pakistan Shoaib has bowled at full pace and gained success.

    Giles went back last night.

  • Christopher wrote:

Jess, I’ve tried to listen to TMS and watch Sky at the same time, but there is always an annoying lag of a couple of seconds which means I know what is going to happen before the ball is bowled. Does this happen to you, or do you have a devious method of getting over this?

  • Jess wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 11.42 am

No, I find that too, and it’s always quite odd. Happened when I was watching on C4 as well, so not just a satellite/cable thing. It was good during the Ashes when I was working all the time - I heard what was happening and could look up just in time to watch it too. Meant I never missed anything :) Even so, I’d rather put up with a delay than listen to the Sky commentary any day.

  • Jess wrote:
    December 1st, 2005 at 11.43 am

Incidentally, listening to TMS online, the delay is the other way round. Odd.

  • Christopher wrote:

I suppose if you’ve got Sky+ you could time the pause button perfectly and get it in synch by yourself….

Yes 3B, we have played very well. I’m especially thrilled for Yousuf, he’s never been short on critics you know, he’s a bit like our version of a Tresco - time and again people start talking about his technique and how he’s not made that many scored big tons against the big guns but hopefully this innings will keep everyone quite for a while, and change his career all round. I’ve been worried immensely off late over our over reliance on Inzi, but now, I think I’m a lot more certain Yousuf can take over that role. This was a very responsible innings, and IMHO the best of his career. And you could tell from the way he celebrated, and how much effort he put into each delivery, that it meant a lot to him. I’m really pleased for him. He’s a good man.

Too bad KoS has already left, any chance of Vaughan going back home after the test series to get his knee fixed? May be some one get persuade Beefy to join that plane. I’ll live in hope.

Oh and yeah 3B, thanks for the compliment, I’m pleased people read it! On reflection now, that really was a rather unconstructive piece, and the subsequent discussion there has drifted from Rana’s impending baldness to Shoaib’s alleged hair overgrowth! Next time I’ll stick to cricket.

I’d like to congratulate Pakistan on a great performance today, and also thank them for making sure I got working early. You know it’s been a bad day when proofreading your thesis is preferable to listening to the ongoing disaster on TMS…sigh.

    Anyway, well done Pakistan.

Been busy since I got in this morning so only just caught up with the days play. Sounds like Pakistan have played a stormer. Any further info on whether Fred has a bug or not?

  • sporty muslimah wrote:

Pakistan have played well, England bowled hard and tried, Plunkett looks like a good prospect I must say, but the batsmen have overshadowed it all. England really should have made between 400-450 esp after being 101-0, but credit to Pak bowlers. I hope Pakistan can bat for a few more hours tomorrow, then England and bowl them out..therefore winning by an innings! :P
