So England stumbled to 248 for 6 when bad light brought a halt to proceedings. It seems to me that this is the custom in Pakistan. Given slow over rates, there is always the demand for the ‘extra’ half hour to get the regulation 90 overs in, so the chances of this happening in Lahore at this time of year are possibly nil.

In fact, Pakistan managed to bowl 77 overs today.

This situation is farcical. Between slow over-rates and bad light, 78 overs were lost during the Second Test, which almost certainly cost Pakistan the game. The solution of course is to schedule Test matches in Pakistan to go for six days of five hours, rather then the traditional five days of six hours.

That way, cricket would be conforming with the natural geography of Pakistan, rather then trying to force the natural geography of Pakistan to conform with cricket. It is just common sense.

Common sense is clearly too common for the ICC…that suggestion makes perfect sense, but betcha it doesn’t get taken up. Betcha.

Seriously. CMJ yesterday suggested the very same idea in The Times. Seems sensible to me but I’m sure the players won’t be happy about playing 3 6 day back to back tests in a row.

Scott - great to see you here mate. But I am not so sure 6 day tests in Pak are a great idea. I know what you are trying to achieve, but cricket rules and regulations are complicated as is without making them geography-specific. Just like most cricket grounds (save the ghastly Telstra Dome) are exposed to the vagaries of weather and have survived, I think even the light factor should be, well, factored in, and the teams must simply get on with it. A more diligent critic could analyse stats to determine how many Tests in Pak ended in draws because of light, but I think most draws there have happened because of the slowness of the pitch, AND defensive tactics by teams before the 4 an over era came by!

Why not play with a luminous ball and night goggles? Any comments on the dire SKY coverage, not missing much I presume?, apart form the match that is. I saw 20 minutes of it once, and that was enough to form a permanant negative opinion.

A better alternative is to not play test cricket at this time of the year, and instead play in August, September, October or Feburary and March, when we have so much light we could consider being generous and donate to other countries if weather exchange was allowed!
