Same as yesterday. Can England (continue to) assert their authority on the game, or will Inzy play a blinder?

Chat away. (Cricinfo live scorecard link)

Morning all. Here we go, Boycs & Aggers are opening for TMS. Any bets when we get our first rhubarb?

and Hoggy gets the first wicket. Lovely.

Please don’t forget to mention if he mentions his Bradmanesque female forebears.

and Freddy gets Inzy out. Nice start to the day. Inzy was just starting to look dangerous but now he is gone the tail should fold pretty quickly now.

Anything under 400 is a bonus for England I reckon. They’re sitting happy at the moment, if they can bat well today and tomorrow that is.

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 5.22 am

probably less than 300 with the Flintoff-Harmison attack now.

And all out for 274 as I write.

A handy little blow to Shoab’s hand from Freddy in the last over, even if it did go for a 4, might put the Rawpindi Express of his bowling a bit.

I love the ball-by-ball over on Cricinfo, but it just doesn’t have the same appeal as lounging on the sofa, watching it all unfold on Channel 4. I hate being at work during a Test.

    So far so good…

Morning everyone - overslept. As I awake - Kaneria comes into the attack.

Still waking up. Looking forward to the afternoon session. I think Pakistan should be worried that they didn’t make 400 and I would think that 400 is the benchmark Trescothick will be looking for.

I reckon probably 220-3 at close of play.

Big turn for Kaneria there. He will be the key.

  • Sean wrote:

Little bit of wobble from Shoaib there.

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 8.21 am

    That’s a bit mean - Shoaib’s love-handles aren’t that big :D

Ruddy hell, it’s freezing here. I’m going back to huddling under the duvet.

I overslept too, 1 hour late for work. The cricket’s a bonus on my first early shift in months…

England looking good, too, which is even more of a bonus.

  • Nick wrote:

Great stuff Tresco - no better way to follow up a huge slice of luck.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 8.44 am

I’m going to have to revisit my score prediction - at this rate they’ll have got to 200 by tea. Reckon Tres was dead in the water with that leg before shout mind. Thanks Billy!

I am surprised not to see Afridi and Rana in this Pakistani Squad.

Rana in my mind is an excellent bowler who can (like Jones & Flintoff) reverse swing the ball at around 90mph.

And Afridi’s batting lower down could have made the difference of 50-60 runs to the total.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 9.56 am

Yes I’d have thought the English batsmen would rather face Shabbir than Rana Naved. I said yesterday that if Razzaq had played, Afridi would probably have played instead of Hasan Raza. I think Woolmer is regretting not playing Afridi.

Shoaib Malik has bowled pretty well though.

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.03 am

must confess, went back to bed after my breakfast. Cold here too. Tres and Bell putting on a good partnership. Glad to see Bell have a good knock.

Slow over rate, though. How has been the culprit, wasting time?

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.06 am

Boycs has been raving away in highly amusing fashion over the slow over-rate, Wraye. Calls it a ‘cheats charter’, which might be a bit harsh in this case but I admit he has a point in general. Surely there has to be some way of speeding it up?

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.17 am

    Ooooh, lucky lucky puppy, Bell!

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.20 am

He did have a good go at the ICC, didn’t he? He does have a pint though. in our League, we now deduct points for slow bowling. Since we started this, all teams have kept to 14-15 overs an hour.

well done Shoab! Bell gets another life!

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.22 am

Wish I had a pint! Although maybe not at this time of day…

A vicious rumour has it that we’re about to lose R4 to the Remembrance Sunday coverage. Or did I hallucinate that?

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.25 am

I don’t think I could manage a pint just yet - maybe with Sunday lunch.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.28 am

Shot Belly, deliberate glide to the 3rd man boundary - a sure sign he is seeing it well - at least now the sight screen has been moved.

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.29 am

    Arrgh, no more R4…

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.35 am

    R4 gone, oh woe!

Meant a “point”, but a pint sounds better. Maybe later.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.36 am

And a wicket - though Malik might have been called for a no ball

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.38 am

Is it Colly or KP in at 4?

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.44 am

Colly - and a ton for Tres to boot

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 10.44 am

Colly is in. Tresco just gets his 100. Score up to 211 for2.

  • Innocent Abroad wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.11 am

Looks like my “rosy scenario” of yesterday (P 270, Eng 270-3) but this is how collapses start, junior partner goes, senior partner just made his ton…

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.12 am

231-2 probably about 8 overs will be bowled today, sun starting to set. Kaneria back on for Shoaib Malik, commentary team thinks Inzi might give him another go from Shabbir’s end.

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.15 am

am cheating now, am on the phone to a mate watching Sky. The shadows are getting longer, Colly just hits a lovely 4. We are going to lose at least 10 overs though.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.15 am

England starting to pick off the singles really nicely now - I suppose this is the introduction of Collingwood. And an awesome sweep from Tres - deep mid wicket didn’t have a chance. I think there were eight runs off that over.

  • Innocent Abroad wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.15 am

Yeah, I forgot you can’t take the extra hour on the sub-continent :)

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.15 am

Seems as though Colly’s settled in OK - how does he look?

This is so annoying - I was working away quite happily when I had the radio on, but now I’m refreshing the live scoreboard page every 15 seconds and getting nowt done. Bummer. Ah well, only a little while to go.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.17 am

Correction - seven off that over. Definitely looking to squeeze Pakistan in the last couple of overs.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.18 am

    Really comfortable

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.24 am

In spite of Colly’s 9 not out, England have added 50 for the third wicket, sumptuous cover deive from Tres there, the 50 has come from 65 deliveries.

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.28 am

    250 up!

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.31 am

Colly’s gone, caught behind. In comes Hoggy as nightwatchman.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.31 am

Gone - regulation nick from Colly to the keeper and Shabbir has a wicket - a bit disappointing really - but it does mean we get to see Hoggie as night watchman.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.33 am

Actually, salthough they’re saying a nothing delivery and a nothing shot - it was a really good line and no particular pace.

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.43 am

253 for 3 and off they go for bad light. Shoaib just hit Tresco a glancing blow on the shoulder so getting too dangerous out there now.

As I thought. 10 overs lost.

    Didn’t we play well!

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.43 am

And that’s it for the day, 253-3 with Tres 135 not out. Really pleased for Ian Bell, he was reading Kaneria really well throughout the day and as a result the leggie posed little threat.

  • Sean wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.44 am

I’d have taken that at the start of the day, Wraye.

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 11.47 am

A good day for England all round, I think. Great to see all the bowlers in good nick early on, and a good show by the top order. Shame to lose that last wicket just before stumps, but never mind. Reckon Tres and Hoggy need to last out the early period tomorrow when the ball may swing a bit, after that I think we could be looking to post a very healthy score.

  • Wraye wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 1.13 pm

Is Bell going for another record? In his BBC interview lasting 2 minutes 39 seconds, he manages to say “you know” a huge 32 times, by my count. May have missed one or two, though, you know?

  • Jess wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 1.27 pm

That’s the classic midlands yokel sound, y’know? East Anglians do it too - but with a more irritating twang. More “y’knaaaaooow”.

  • Zainub wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 4.04 pm

Afridi should have played, but in place of one of the seamers not Raza, Raza’s place should probably have been taken by Asim Kamal.

The ideal line up for this test should have been
Malik Butt Younis Inzi Yousuf Asim Kamran Afridi Rana Shoaib Kaneria

Sami and Shabbir both rely on conditions to get wicket, or far too much for them to have a big affect on this kind of surface. There isn’t much point in playing 3 genuine quicks on this surface unless they’re all us skilful or clevel or consistent as England’s are. And Sami’s not proved him self at test level for a while anyway, an average of 44 at test level after 22 game is just not good enough, we should send him back to domestic level now. He needs a bit of a reality check - he’s been taking his place in the side for granted, he must be punished for this, and others like Rana be given a chance.

  • Zainub wrote:
    November 13th, 2005 at 4.19 pm

PS on Bell: He’s a really funny man! The fact that he forget to get the side screen adjusted at one point got me in stitches! Talk about living in a parallel world! Shame that was a no ball from Shaoib! Brilliant delivery otherwise.

    Belly doesn’t sound brummie, though, I don’t think…
