Steve Harmison feels strongly about suggestions that he came out of one-day retirement in order to play the Stanford Twenty20 for 20

    Vaughan out (nearly), Cook in

By Will 3 years ago, mid-November Leave a comment on this post

Alastair Cook’s been called up. Interesting selection - ahead of Robert Key, who must surely now be apoplectic with rage. It was Cook who smashed a double hundred against Australia, at nearly a run-a-ball, earlier in the summer.

Key and Shah have both recently undergone surgery, so I guess neither were up for selection. It’s a real shame as I would love to see Key get a good England run.

Butcher also unavailable so they had no option really.

am glad for Cook. He was also voted Young Cricketer of the Year, and if you look at a list of past winners, most of them e.g. Freddie, have gone on to achieve great things. Go for it, Cook!

Not yet seen him play, but better judges than us rate him very highly. Which amounts to bugger all, really! All depends on the person in question and how able they are to cope with the mental side of international cricket, not just their skill etc.

Will…about the mental ability to cope…also remeber that a subcontinent tour is specially tough for an English debutant. Wonder if he’s played here with junior or A teams or some such?

Anyway, a very tough way to blood a young bloke..hope he survives :-)

well, he captained the U19 in Bangladesh in 2004 and scored 2 centuries over there. Not the same as pakistan, I know, but must be worth something.

that was the U19 World Cup, by the way.

He has quite recent subcontinent experience, Cook was part of England A when they toured Sri Lanka earlier this year in March. Scored 62 & 18 in the first test vs Sri Lanka A, 27 & 36 in the second.

I thought Ed Joyce was ahead of him in the pecking order !

Ed Joyce is not a gtop three batsman. They need an opener in case Strauss flies home before the third test. But yes, otherwise Joyce is ahead of him in the pecking order.

The BBC has Prior down as a possible replacement for Vaughan. Surely a very risky option!
