    Dedication to the cause

Bloke watching cricket in a cafe

September 2005, Ashes Test England v Australia. A few brave souls in NYC watch the match start at 5.30 a.m. From Flickr user David Reeves. Talking of such matters, who (apart from me) will be up at 4am GMT (or wherever in the world you live) for Saturday’s first Test?

I will mostly likely be there, massive pot of tea, scoresheets and nice sharp encil at the ready. I have a really old little tranny than can pick up the TMS signal.

I’m not even going to ask what an “old little tranny” is!

sigh. I often forget how young you are.
Translation: transistor radio, battery powered with an antenna arial. Museum piece really but it picks up TMS which my modern digital radio does not.

Pulling your leg, Wraye. Chris - you’ll just have to stick by this blog :) I’ll be up and about and at work by 4am (6pm NZ time? ish) so you kiwis can put your feet up, crack open a beer and “enjoy” the turgid subcontinent cricket (I just have a feeling it’s going to be quite slow and turgid.)

I’m looking forward to good old test cricket at proper times (been a long, wait), half past 9 start so I’ll probably be up 8:30 or so, fix a paratha for break fast, and read the newspapers, then find my self the perfect spot. And enjoy.

fell for that one all right, Will. Got my own back about the bloody awful painting, though methinks.

Looking forward to a couple of all-nighters to show respect for our Aussies who were there with us through the Ashes - Elliot, are you listening?

Lucky people in New York… Out here in California I was doing video captures at 5:00 a.m. for the 5th test (and I’m not even English). And thank goodness they replay some key moments, because there was no way I could wake up at 2:30 a.m. to watch the morning session. And I had to pay $40 for just that one test (more than I paid for the DVD’s of all 5 tests).

Of course it was easier to watch with my broadband in California than it was when I was in Paris during early August. I think there’s only one English pub in Paris that opens before late afternoon. It took me 45 min. to get there by metro, and one time they went and switched to a pointless soccer match when the cricket fans stepped out during the lunch break, and they refused to switch back. That was when Flintoff was batting at Edgbaston. After that I was inclined to just listen to the TMS radio broadcast on the net.

Thanks for the reminder about Saturday’s test. I’ll have to catch a bit of TMS online if I’m awake and around the computer while it’s going on. It’s 13 hours of time difference for me, so I guess I’ll be having breakfast just before stumps. I hope they don’t end early with bad light.

Alan R. The question is: Is TMS available online for this series? . I seem to think its not!

TMS will not be available online outside of the UK. I have a whole League of boys working on this problem for us.

I wonder why cricinfo or Willow TV have no offers online?

Can they really restrict access to online radio to UK users?

It would be sad if there’s no TMS, but I’ll probably get more things accomplished if I’m not listening to Henry Blofeld in the middle of the night.

Hi there! Glad you liked my photo, and thanks for blogging it. I have a slightly improved version now, here.

I watched all five matches from start to finish over here in NYC, and it was terrific! Great blog btw…
