  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

    Liam Plunkett’s chance

By Will 3 years ago, mid-October Leave a comment on this post

Liam Plunkett has been called up as back-up for the injured Chris Tremlett. I remain unconvinced about Tremlett; his main weapon is his height, but his action doesn’t make the most of it. He falls away, with a bent knee - and his approach to the crease, and follow-through, all need a lot of work (this is all in my very dodgy opinion, you understand).

And - he’s injured, again. So Liam Plunkett has a great chance to impress. Well regarded young fast bowler - big, big opportunity for him to outgun Tremlett and maybe others…

Interesting, his Cricinfo says he can bat a bit as well.

I meant his Cricinfo profile, bad typo.

I have to admit, I haven’t watched Tremlett play really, except a bit during the C&G, so I can’t really comment on his action. His is very tall though.

Anyway, what I really wanted to comment on was how surprised I was that Adam Gilchrist was so far out of the running in the ICC awards today. I can understand Kallis being up there on his batting ave alone, but I expected Gilly to be closer than he was. Odd.

Watched Plunkett in an Eng U19 game (v Kent 2nds) a couple of years ago (With Mick Didds, Will) and he looked distinctly sharp (Liam not Mick) with a decent delivery stride. Don’t think he’l get a game but think he is the right bowler to be going on tour.

Jess: these awards are annoying in that they take into account July-July (or something like that). The year up to and including the Lord’s Ashes Test. dunno if that helps.

Sean - agreed. Only seen him once, but have read lots of and about him, and he seems to be on the right path. Cooley’s spoken of him, too, which is always a pointer worth noting…

Not sure how tall he is though, never struck me, his height…

Not making any sense. Pub + late = blahhh

Yeah, I knew that the awards only included the Lord’s test. That’s kind of why I was confused about Gilchrist - that was pretty much his only duff series, as far as I can remember. Oh well, maybe that’s what you get when you look like a Lord of the Rings character

And Tremlett is 6′7″, I think.

I just checked out his stats for the last season, he got 51 wickets (which is commendable) but he got them at 31 a pieace (which isn’t particularly impressive). I’m asuming his ability with the bat might have pushed him ahead of the others like Sidebottom and Brenson in the pecking order. Either way, I can’t see him getting a game. So I guess for him it’s only going to be about gaining experience from bowling in the nets. Unless some one gets injuired obviously.

I think county form is less important to the selectors than simply someone with promise who looks willing to put the work in. Cooley’s already spoken about how Plunkett took his year at the Academy to heart and completely remodelled his action to avoid injury.

Hopefully, having Plunkett and Collingwood on the tour will make Harmison feel less homesick; whether there’s pace in the pitch or not, he remains a vital psychological weapon to counter Ahktar, and his action roughs up the ball nicely so Fred can get some early reverse swing.

While they have cost 31ish, 101 first class wickets in a couple of seasons, bearing in mind he’s only 20, is very promising.

Definitely, I hope he’s got the right mentality for test cricket though and that it’s not too early a la James Anderson. Don’t want the confidence battered out of him

I saw Plunkett bowl at Edgbaston during the final Totesport game of the season, and I was very impressed with him fwiw. He picked up the wickets of Knight for 25 and Penney for 17 (party-pooping his farewell innings), with overall figures of 2 for 38 from 9.

So Tremlett’s out then. Poor lad, after being picked for the Ashes, he’s certainly had wretched luck.
