Possible Pakistani Earthquake fundraiser?

By Will 5 years ago, mid-October Add your comment below

Harry emailed me to say:

Pakistan has just suffered an earthquake which they think has killed
at least 19000 people. England tour Pakistan in about a month. Surely
this is a money-raIsing opportunity?

I’ll commit to 20p for every run Flintoff scores in an international.
You’re in a better position than me, between Corridor of Uncertainty
and Cricinfo, to persuade others to make a similar commitment. There
must be good publicity for a lot of businesses in doing this.

The death-toll is, according to the news, going to rise beyond 20,000 in coming days. While we can’t do much to help, nor offer anything to save (m)any lives, such a gesture would be a good and worthwhile thing to do. What are your thoughts? It seems too good an opportunity, what with England touring Pakistan in a few weeks.

Would you be willing to cough up £x.xx per run for any one batsman (or more than one)? Or perhaps £x.xx per runs conceded by a bowler, or indeed wickets? If the general consensus is good, I’m very happy to organise it all and tally up the amounts at the end of the series, and mail the cheque to a suitable charity. On a similar line, I’m very, very wary of charities and won’t give money out to “any old charity.” But I’ll look into that. Leave your thoughts below.

Thanks for the idea Harry.

Absolutely. I’ll have to look at the finances a bit, but will definitely get back to you.

Pickled Politics (http://www.pickledpolitics.com/) suggest not giving directly to Kashmiri charities, but they do give a list of the ones they think are legit. I don’t know whether MSF (http:/www.msf.org/) have plans to go to the region, but watching the news that looks like the sort of thing they require.

Sure, I’m up for that. Happy with 20p per Flintoff run, but perhaps too much weight on one man’s shoulders? How about 1 – 1.5p per England run?

Sounds doable. For your info, England scored 1648 runs in the first three Ashes Tests this summer which, I think, amounts to £16.48. I think what I’ll do, so long as there’s a genuine desire that I go ahead with it, is allow people different methods of donating. Nick – you could give 1p per England run, whereas Jess and Harry might pay £0.xx per Flintoff run. It can be flexible, and I’ll update people’s pledges on a separate post. Could be a start of something… :)

Great idea, and thanks for the link Will. I also read in this mornings papers that the PCB is keen to play its part, and is definately thinking on the lines of organising a fund raising match. No more details on this as yet.

I can understand how people can be wary of charities, I guess the safest and most reliable way at present would be to deposit the money directly in the president’s relief fund. Although locally I think at the moment, at least I speak of Karachi, no one is doubting anyone’s intentions, when I went out for Taraweeh last evening there were fund raisers being held every where, some by welfare socities I’ve never heard of before, others by more well known charities, yet most of the stalls were mostly jam packed with people donating both cash, and relief goods, as well as volunteering to help out with packing the stuff before it leaves for the affected areas.

Personally I’ve been told it’s better to help with direct aid then cash, because that’s the faster way to help. People are out in the open, and they need food and warm clothes, and blanket, as well as tents. The people of Karachi has been donoting very generously, and all that kind of stuff has been collecting at the Pakistan Air Force Measeum off Shahrah-e-Faisal (just in case anyone in Karachi is reading this) by the tons, apparently they’ll need about 35 C-5s to transport all that has been collected, an they anticipiated only about one C-5 to be enough, so this would give you a good idea of how well people have responded. Personally I have plans to go there this morning. Need to go now, Sehri time.

Ah Will my late-night beery logic perhaps made me look a bit stingy – happy to give 2p per England run, that was more the area I was looking for (you’ll be amazed how long it took me to work it out originally).

PS nice joke Elliot(’s dad), can’t guarantee I won’t claim that as my own either at some point…
