Essex smash 500 in a day. Against Australia

By Will 5 years ago, at the start of September Add your comment below

As if this summer’s events couldn’t get any more bizarre. Australia were chasing red leather all day at Chelmsford, as Essex smashed over 500 in day. 500 in a day – the mind boggles. Alastair Cook, massively promising 20-year-old opener, hit 214 at nearly a run a ball. I did a brief report on Cricinfo, the most interesting bit being the quotes by John Buchanan:

Coach John Buchanan remained pleased with the efforts his bowlers showed, however.

“Generally, I thought we bowled and fielded well,” he said. “There were positives from all of them. It is important we go through the physical demands of the game and all of our bowlers did that OK.”

“The energy and attitude was first-class throughout, even though a flat pitch and fast outfield did nothing to help the bowlers.”

Straws, clutching, etc. Flat pitch it may have been, but today was surely one of the more depressing for a touring side in England for a long time.

I’m not sure how much we can read into yesterday’s stats.

It obviously wasn’t a good day for the baggy greens, but besides the flat pitch, there was no Warne and no McGrath. The bad news for Australia is that MacGill didn’t make much of a case for his inclusion, and Lee seems to need some help from the pitch.

England’s likely and hopeful players didn’t seem to fare much better in the C & G final, though. Tremlett’s numbers look decent (though bowling out Loudon and Ntini is not necessarily an indicator that he’d trouble Langer and Ponting), and while Bell’s 54 looks good, he suffered from cramps, which does not bode well.

Here’s the line on the Aussies who might bowl at the Oval:
    B Lee 69 – 0
    J N Gillespie 80 – 0
    S W Tait 72 – 2
    S C G MacGill 128 – 0
    M S Kasprowicz 85 – 2

And the England test players/hopefuls who played in the C & G:
    C T Tremlett 48 – 2
    A F Giles 50 – 0
    K P Pietersen caught for 5
    I R Bell caught for 54

If Hayden scores 118 off 150 balls, or just 100 of however many balls, against anything other than a popgun attack on a flat pitch on this tour, I’ll eat my hat.
