Shane Watson hits double-hundred

By Will 5 years ago, at the end of August Add your comment below

Shane Watson hit an unbeaten double-hundred today, against Warwickshire. He’s a very useful Cricketer, and I’m surprised he hasn’t been called up as cover for any of Australia’s out of form, or out of luck, bowlers.

He might bat quite well, but unfortunately for Australia, he bowls like Simon O’Donnell.

Yeah. He’s just ‘not quite there’ either as a batsman or a bowler.

More or less the impression I got. The difficulty for Australia is that Gilchrist is not firing; if he were I’d bat him at six, followed by Warne, Lee, McGrath, Tait and MacGill. Trouble is, he isn’t.

Having said all that, hasn’t Watson only recently recovered for a fairly serious back injury (or is that someone else). If he could improve his pace/accuracy, you’d have to say that he’d be a shoo in either at six or seven.

I think I heard him, described elsewhere (RSC?) as Allan Border’s lovechild. Is this true? Metarphorically rather than literally, I mean.

Gilchrist to open – when the ball isn’t reversing – he can’t possibly average less than the 22 he’s getting now – drop Hayden (in memory of Slats’ axing) – Langer opens with Gilly, Ponting, Martyn, Clarke, Katich, Warne, Lee, McGrath, MacGill, Tait – yes there are three genuine number 11s there. We need to win. Hayden is not going to win it for us. Neither are Gillespie, Clark or Kasper.

    or Watson, for that matter.

I think Andy Symonds could be a better option compared to Watson.

Symonds had been consistent both with bat and ball for Lancashire and could be an ideal No.6 batsmen for Aussies.

I agree about Symonds – some of his performances this season have been phenomenal, with both bat and ball: he could have been doing to England what Freddie is doing to Australia.

Only with his spin, not his seam up. How can you compare 70mph dobbers with 90 mph strike bowling. But I agree; Symonds is twice the batsman Katich is IMO.

Twice the batsman? Symonds is a fine player, but does he have the resolve to bat a session without scoring many?

Katich, Langer, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, Hodge, Gilchrist, Warne, Lee, Tait, McGrath

    IN: Hussey, Hodge, McGrath
    OUT: Hayden, Martyn, Kasprowizc

    EMERGENCY: MacGill (for McGrath)
