England v Australia, Trent Bridge, Day Four

This match is perfectly set-up. England start favourites, but Gilchrist is overdue a sensational innings, and Katich could do with a few. Comment away!

Gidday – what do youreckon Elliot, are we a chance?

  • Sean wrote:

I reckon the only chance Aus had to win the game was by following on. Get a 200 lead then unleash Warney on the fifth day and who knows….

Ah well, one can only hope :-|

Well – the new ball is due and Hoggard has gone off the field.

    It’s ok – he’s back

If Australia are to be a chance then we have to bat all day. Clarkey and Katich have made a good start. And we are almost infront :)

Phew – that lbw shout was close

  • Will wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.15 pm

Mighty close. Very good effort by Clarke and Katich so far, and England are really missing Jones. Who would’ve thought we’d be saying that at the start of the series?

My little brother just asked me what the black dot on the back of Andrew Flintoff’s head is?

Apart from me you mean, Will. I think the guy who needs to rediscover his wicket taking ability is Harmison. We need a five for from him because he has had a quiet few tests.

  • Sean wrote:

I’m getting edgy now – England need a wicket. Just the one, to get Gilchrist to thw wicket with the ball still reasonably new and Fred fresh

I just scared the crap out of my 11 year old :) He was quietly sitting on the sofa playing his game boy when I yelled out “gone”. Wife came in wondering what on earth all the commotion was and when I told her it was a wicket she wasn’t too impressed. “is that all”

    Grrrrr

  • Darryl wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.33 pm

    Sorry mate … :)

Dean Jones reckons that if Australia sets England a score of 170+, then it could be tough work for the home team. What do you think Australia needs to set to be in with a chance?

  • Will wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.33 pm

England just has to be patient. Australia are effectively 11 for 5; on a personal level, only when the target goes beyond 200 will I become nervous. Anything under that is a bonus.

  • Will wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.34 pm

Darryl: I reckon Aus need 250 to be in with a chance. Tait bowled well in the first innings, but he’s a liability, as is Lee and Kasper. Only Warne can win it for Australia…

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.36 pm

Yeah 250-300 hundred would make me feel a little bit comfortable. But Warney on day five could be good…

  • nick wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.37 pm

    At a guess, either 384 ( http://aus.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/2000-01/AUS_IN_IND/SCORECARDS/AUS_IND_T2_11-15MAR2001.html )or 130 ( http://usa.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1980S/1981/AUS_IN_ENG/AUS_ENG_T3_16-21JUL1981.html ).

    8-)

    Seriously, about 180-200.

  • Darryl wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.49 pm

Yeah, I think something over 200 would make it challenging (but still achievable) for England. But first they have to get there, and that will be very, very, very hard.

  • Sean wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 12.51 pm

  • Will wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.10 pm

Yup, a shocker decision by Aleem Dar, and a shocking drop by Jones. Warne now smashing Giles for six! What a day it’s been, already.

  • Elliott wrote:

    Runout LBW….

  • Harry wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.14 pm

you know i’ve never been a fan of further technology in the game but i have to say we bloody damn well need it. Fucking rediculous. It would be bloody close if the fucking umpires would make the right calls. We had Jones caught behind and given not out and he went on to make 85 but more importantly stayed around with Flintoff, Pontings edge was so faint cant really complain but martyn’s again was a shocker. And now katich!

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.18 pm

    Good evening Harry,
I think technolgy can only be a good thing for the game, as long as it dosn’t hold up play for ages.

  • Harry wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.24 pm

yeah g’day. better holding up play than having matches decided by the umpires. I’m not trying to make excuses for Australias probable defeat, England have out played australia, but these mistakes could end up costing us 200 runs if you add them all up. If catches win and lose matches, then so do bad umpiring decisions because they have the same result, either batsman in or out. Technology all the damn way.

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.29 pm

Yeah! I once had an idea of putting sensors in the crease, in the ground. That would help with no-balls. so the umpire wouldn’t have to worry about looking down every ball. And it would help with run-outs!

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.31 pm

    I can’t believe it???
Jones actully took a stumping :(

  • Harry wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.38 pm

I just want the last of the tail enders to smack it around for the bit and then Lee and Tait come on an bowl flat out, cause them some trouble. Yeah we’ll lose but we can still take something out of this match if tait comes on and grabs a few, gets in the englands minds ahead of the next test.

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.44 pm

Yeah and who knows…England are about due for a major colapse. Any thing can happen…

  • jgohil wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 2.44 pm

Come on harry. You must be joking blaming the bad umpiring decisions for poor aussie performance. You guys have just played bad cricket. Accept the loss and aussie cricket is on a decline.

  • Elliott wrote:

    100 lead ;)

  • Harry wrote:

did KP and G.Jones have the same catching coach as youngsters? I feel for the bloke he’s had some tough ones and they arent sticking for him

  • nick wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 3.33 pm

Maybe England have copied Australia in one too many areas – get a great bowling attack and you can afford to drop a few….

  • nick wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 3.37 pm

Let’s hope for something like England in South Africa – got rolled for a few low scores there….

Another good quote on the Guardian’s OBO commentary, from a reader’s email:

“Given the recurrent theme in the series, on assessing lbw decisions should the umpires be considering whether balls going on to hit the stumps would have dislodged the bails or not?”

  • Elliott wrote:

My colleague here at Cricinfo is really nervous at the moment. I, on the other hand, think England will walk away with this. And a four from Strauss

  • Harry wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 4.34 pm

and jgohil, when did i blame the umpiring on australias poor performance? I never said the umpires told the australia batsman they werent allowed to make over 60. But you must be joking if you think the decisions haven’t made things harder for Australia.

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 4.38 pm

Will Siomon Jones bat, if needed?
If not then Australia only need 9 ;)

  • Harry wrote:

I actually went to bed an hour ago, i had only just rested my head down after getting changed when i thought bugger it ill turn the tv back on, good thing i did. But seriously if england just keep their head they should still win.

  • Will wrote:

    Mmm…ok I’m getting a little edgy now.

  • Nick wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 4.58 pm

The umps have been missing a few no-balls here. Lee was well over the line there when he got that edge from Flintoff.

  • Nick wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 5.00 pm

…having said that, I think on the balance of things, we can’t complain

  • Will wrote:
    August 28th, 2005 at 5.07 pm

Absolutely, Nick. Still no massive concern…England “only” need another 60-odd

  • mark wrote:

Harry should stop moaning about umpiring what has been going aroud for 15+ years, is just coming back around, cop it sweet Harry and get used to it, it’s character building, i can recommend losing with grace as an antidote to your misery.

  • japaddy wrote:
    August 29th, 2005 at 3.58 am

Harry let’s get rid of Big Screen replay’s and monitors at the ground, then you might get some of the pissheads and Mexican wavers actually watching the game.
Technology is undermining Umpire authority, and player dignity.Have you ever sat through a Gridiron match.
Cricket is different, the game as a spectacle has just reached a high water mark. Part of that magnificent drama has been umpiring falibility, the game is much bigger than technology, it’s Biblical!!

    Go in peace Harry……..
