    Geraint Jones…again

By Will 3 years ago, at the end of August Leave a comment on this post

He’s had a tough series has Geraint. But did you know his tally of 36 catches is the most for a ‘keeper this year? One of those odd facts that no one can explain! (well, I can try: it’s England’s continued excellent bowling attack which has given him so many to catch)

Well, batting and bowling averages are pretty indisputable, particularly over a full career, but wicket-keeping is far harder to assess, it’s so much more of a team effort - let me plug (again) “byes per 1000 balls” as a possible comparator of stumpers’ ability.

and has england not played mre tests than other teams as well?

Jones (G) is a pretty poor excuse for a wicketkeeper. England’s bowlers have been good enough to keep him in the side. Chris Read (?) should (and probably is) spitting chips.

Jones has made some horrible errors in the last Test, but we soon forget.

He clung onto everything in the One-dayers. It’s the curse of wicketkeeping: Make a mistake and you are awful, stay tidy/catch everything and nobody notices. It’s the only position where anything less than perfection is derided.

As a wicket-keeper myself i can only say that the 4th Test proved beyond doubt in my mind that Jones has to go, the disasterous consequences of not only his apalling display behind the sticks but that rush of blood in our nerve racking chase at the end is surely the end for this guy. His wicket keeping is borne from a dreadful technique and the errors are a product of this, basic changes to this poor style could help, but his hands don’t comfort the ball hence so many spillages. Bring Read in, he’s class an not so big a mug with the bat either.

I feel sorry for Jones. He’s an okay (at best) ‘keeper, but he’s put down some howlers and is generally shoddy in his glove work. He also has an annoying habit of catching the ball with his fingers facing upwards, rather than downwards, which is a real no no for quality keepers. As David says, keep it clean and tidy and no-one notices you, spill a few and…

Yes he is a competent batsman, but he blows hot and cold in that department too. I don’t blame him too much for holing out at TB as he was trying to impose himself, and he can certainly hit 6s, but he is no more to blame than the 6 wickets that had already fallen.

I suspect he’ll remain as England’s first choice keeper but be replaced by Read during the winter tour to the Asian subcontinent.

    Cheers all

    Gareth

I feel real sorry for Jones. I believe his mistakes are most probably caused by the pressure he is under. And people like you guys who are saying really quite disrespectful things, does not help his confidence at all. Don’t you think with encouragement and self belief he can lead England to the victory they deserve.

  • Gareth wrote:

Yes he has taken some good catches, no one is denying that. It’s the simple dropped catches and missed stumpings that are of concern…

  • steve wrote:

Keeping wicket is probably the best position in any cricket team. Trouble is that people only ever seem to remember the mistakes you make and not the cathes , stumpings or good tidy takes to pretty average returns…and look at some of the other England players who have made some dreadful howlers…Peiterson for one has dropped 6 cathes !
I have kept at club level which can be pressurised so imagine what GJ goes through ! All he can do is be positive and not dwell on what has gone before. I think he has done well in a very tough series and contributed with the bat. Read had his chance but can’t have been that good can he !

    Go for it GJ !

Maybe it’s time Matt Prior got a chance this winter? I’ve wanted to give Jones the benefit of the doubt but he keeps making mistakes. However, I do rate him as a batsman, and he’s out-performed Gilchrist (famous last words perhaps?).

I think that Geraint ‘the howler’ Jones got into the team undeservedly in the 1st place. Read was kicked out the team unfairly in WI 2003. so Jones got his chance and apart from the 1st test debut he has not shined since. Got batting potential but too eratic. And he ain’t the best keeper on god’s earth either.

    Bring Read Back!!!

He amazing… can’t call him shit, hes in the england cricket team, he wouldn’t have got there if he was shit!

People concentrate on the ones hes missed not what hes been sucessful on.

I mean come on Pieterson has lost us a fair few this time!!

  • steve wrote:

I agree Charlie, the one he dropped yesterday (Sunday) was a hardish chance going like a rocket but he dived in front of first slip and if he committs himself to take those chances then he must catch them.He didn’t move his feet quickly enough and then mistimed his dive.

Still I think he’s done a fairly good job when you look at some of the chances England’s other players have spilled…poor old Peiterson has had a mare in the field….the crowd seem to cheer him when he manages to stop the ball never mind catch it !

Read is by far the better keepr, he is a ‘natural’ keeper in the way Jones and Stewart aren’t- more of a manufactured keeper.
Read looks worryingly suspect with a bat, but then again so does Jones.
I’d rather have Read in my test team, purely for his fluency with the gloves, and any runs over 30 are a bonus.

  • Big Ern wrote:

Geraint Jones - What more needs to be said for this sad excuse of a cricketer ? Out for the third time in a row playing that airy-fairy drive with the angled bat which always goes straight to gully. He reminds me of a 14 year old learning how to bat and a piss poor one at that. He now has the impressive statistic of a test average of just over 20 and a series average of 12. I suspect most of his test runs have have been scored against Zimbabwe and Bangledesh. Send this useless twat back on the next plane with Gilo !! Read gets dropped following last summer with a series average against Pakistan of 42 and almost flawless wicketkeeping. Go figure. Jones must be taking it up the arse from Fletcher.

  • Ruth wrote:

I don’t have a clue what everyone is on about, Read is by far the better wicketkeeper and has improved on his batting average, whereas jones’s has dropped. I suppose i am biased being a huge Notts fan, but surely if people want the best team England can produce we need Read. Also, well said Big Ern and Jackdawbob.

  • Woodyway wrote:

He should be recalled and his team mate Key given the nod.
Hopefully the obnoxious Reid has gone forever.
The only reason Prior [poor baby hurt his fingerums] is in the side is because of the Sussex[nice place] Mafia-don’t get on me the Romford one please.
Anyway that’s life-’It’s not what you know but whom.-virtue chastised!
    [it was Jones,of course-who else?]

  • Big Ern wrote:

You must be having a laugh.

Jones would struggle to get in our club second eleven.

I predict that once his present contract runs out it wont be renewed, and no other county will touch him with a barge pole!!!
