England v Australia, Old Trafford, Day Five

By Will 5 years ago, mid-August Add your comment below

The evening after the evening before: Review

18.49: England, needing just one more wicket, tossed the ball to Steve Harmison who bowled poorly, to end the game in a thrilling draw. We asked whether Edgbaston could be bettered and, arguably, it just has. Australia are very lucky to come away with a draw, despite a monumental innings by Ricky Ponting. I’ve never witnessed such a series, and nor have 21,000+ at Old Trafford. Gutting for England, elation for Australia. Momentum now shifts to the Aussie camp? I need more beer, and can’t even think about cricket for the time being. Thanks for the comments everyone, enjoyable as always.

17.52: Australia are going for the win. Ponting and Warne are still in, 337-7. As if a draw wouldn’t depress England enough, they surely can’t lose this? 71 balls left, 86 to win for Australia and 3 wickets for England to get. They look knackered and flat

UPDATE: Australia 269/7. Simon Jones bowling wonderfully, and Ricky Ponting the lone batsman on 103*

England needs 10 wickets to go 2-1 up in the 2005 Ashes series.

Australia needs 399 runs in (about) 90 overs.

I really can’t call this one. England start favourites, but as fifth-day pitches go, it doesn’t look too bad. Should be an absorbing day, and could be thrilling. Please, let’s hope it doesn’t go down to the wire again though!

Really love the blog – I only wish I had the time to produce something of this quality. Anyway, I’ve spent what time I have into the small hours (sad I know), putting together some ironic quotes from the Aussie Press. Check ‘em out.

What’s the matter dude? We need more drama in this series, not less! Even if it causes heart palpitations and traumatic fluctuations in blood pressure:)

Exactly my point – it’s dangerous for our health!

Old Trafford looks absolutely packed. Really wish I was there, although I’d never have managed to get there on time; they’re turning people away at the gates! When did this last happen? Not in my lifetime, that I can remember anyway…

    3rd Test – Day Five

Well, we finally made it to the fifth day of a Test match, and anything could happen. The Corridor of Uncertainty says it could go either way, while Cricinfo says that it’s time for the Aussies to remember their world-champion

That’s great, Will. If this series has helped to restore the prominence of cricket in England then that’s a really, really good thing. If we (Australia) lose the series, then that’s probably a good price to pay.

  • Harry wrote:

Aus got to aim to get the 1st 200 runs without losing any wickets, or the least amount possible, no matter how slow it takes, then they can readdress the situation from there, if they are in a position to go for the win then great.

Interesting last over before drinks from Fred. Is there a problem is filling the slip cordon? Do we really think Aus will get 423? Athers is suggesting Fred should try the inswinger. Sean reckons it’s time for Jones the Steam (with apologies to Ivor the Engine).

    Morning Will.

Forgot to mention – good to see a full OT on the last day. Tickets were £10 (A$23) for adults and £5 for children. Apparently they had to open the gates early to get everyone in and had been considering getting big screens in. Perhaps they should have opened up the other Old Trafford as well.

  • Will wrote:

Good idea! Now that would have been a sight, seeing the Man-U faithful sitting on the grass watching the cricket…

Agree re the slips Sean. Hayden must have used at least 6 of his 9 lives this morning, but Australia are still only one down after an hour’s play. and OHHHHHHH Giles nearly bowls him, somehow it missed the stumps!! CRAZY

  • Darryl wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 11.56 am

Interesting to note this one (if it hasn’t been pointed out before) … so far in this series, Shane Warne has a higher batting average and a better bowling average than Freddie Flintoff. Flintoff has scored 25 more runs, but has played 1 innings more than Warne … whilst Warne has taken 8 more wickets than Flintoff. If Freddie is England’s greatest all-rounder since Beefy Botham, what does that make Warney?
(I don’t seriously think Warne is in the same class as Flintoff, but it’s an interesting stat, if somewhat surprising)

  • Will wrote:

Dean Jones or Greg Matthews (not sure which one) said Australia can’t win from here anymore. Don’t tell me he was expecting Aus to score quicker? If these to can get to 200 with with a decent run rate aus will still have a chance (gilchrist at 6 remember)if they don’t, then i very much doubt it and England will very much like their chances of cleaning Aus up. I think it’s just about an even session. Aus would have liked to lose only the 1 wicket by lunch, but england would have wanted at least another.

  • Darryl wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 12.44 pm

Who will in? I think it’s up to Australia … if they don’t make stupid mistakes (as they’ve done repeatedly in the past), they’ll hang on for a lucky draw. However, I’m going to say goodnight, as I’ve got a massive day at work tomorrow. Bye! :)

Oh, I thought they’d had a good game actually! Bowden especially. Bucknor’s decision was poor just now, and not his first in the matches he has officiated in recently…shit happens, unfortunately for Martyn.

I have to start work at 2.40 am and the Test, if it goes the course, will finish about 3am. I tried going to sleep about 9 pm, but after an hour… I’m not able to sleep, not just because the cricket but because I’m nervous about sleeping through the alarm. So I might as well watch the bloody game…

The Martyn LBW raises an important point; regardless of the rightness of the decision it is important to get wood on ball and prevent frequent appeals, as umpires tend to be like parents; if the child asks for a lolly often enough, the parent will give the lolly.

  • Elliott wrote:

  • Will wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 1.53 pm

Well the longer he stays there, the better he’ll feel (Ponting). All depends on whether he gets partnerships with the other batters, then they can think about the win. Odds on for a draw, unless they make stupid mistakes – like Katich nearly did, swishing at a wide one. Ridiculous shot given the circumstances.

  • worma wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 1.55 pm

I think if they get 3-4 good overs more, Vaughan would start feeling the heat. Not sure if he would keep attacking then. As for Aus, if they get the req to under 200 with same pair, they would go for win. Whatever the asking rate.

A win? Goodness, hope springs eternal. I gave up hope of a win when Hayden was out.

Can not see us escaping this now, but hopefully Ponting will make sure England have to work for it.

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 2.11 pm

I think a draw is really important for the big picture, The Ashes. If Australia can force a draw then England will have to win both the last two tests (unless there is another draw) to get the Ashes where as Australia will only need to win one more to retain the Ashes.

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 2.13 pm

And is this is a draw and Aus and Eng win one more each then Australia still retain the Ashes. (i forgot that bit before)

  • Will wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 2.19 pm

Yes, so Australia can draw the series but still retain The Ashes…hence why it’s so important for England to win, quite apart from having dominated the match so strongly in the past five days.

  • Harry wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 2.23 pm

when i said almost, i meant the fact that these two are still in, and if these two stay in to the end then australia could win, it’s just highly unlikely. don’t get me wrong, i’m not any where near hoping for a win

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 15th, 2005 at 2.25 pm

Hence why it’s so important for AUSTRALIA to win/draw, quite apart from being outplayed in all parts of the game over the past five days.

I think with Gilly out and an injured Michael Clarke in Australia will surely shut up shop now. If Australia still had any hopes of a win before Gilly would of had to been the key man. Just block the rest of the day out now and take the draw.

i can’t remeber stuff like that. It was my first game at the MCG and my Ashes debut ;) i was about 5 yrs old i think…
I just remeber all the poms running onto the ground at the end and being chased by police. And i got to walk on the ground after all the fuss a colled done.

Well here is a funny story (i promise it will be the last one ;) )
Aus V Pakistan in Hobart. (being a tasmanian i h ave been to all bar one of tests down here!) Me and dad took the thursday and friday off work/school and watched the first four days of pakistan dominating and setting Aus 400 in the last innings, Ponting making a pair in hishome test. So it got to the end of day four and dad decided that there was no chance of us winning so we drove home (4 hours away) so as not to miss school/work on monday. Well enter Justin Langer and Adam Gilchrist. ( i’m sure you have hear of this game before). i went apsoulutly off at dad on monday night. Not a happy chappy. :(

Pietersen’s just dropped the Ashes? Not necessarily, but he’s probably dropped England’s chances of going 2-1 up. 5 chances for him, and 5 drops.

Oh. My. God. Australia are going for it, they’re GOING for the win, not the draw.

Great performance by the Aussies, fantastic knock by Ponting…

But what price a Gough for that last over? Probably one of the worst overs Harmison has ever bowled

This pom is too lost for words. Have just sunk 4 beers in an hour, as much to calm my nerves as anything. Debating whether to console myself with mates at the pub…

Gutting for England. Wonderful for Australia, and well played Ponting. I’ll write it up when I’ve recovered.

Well I was in bed all of yesterday, feel much better today – but now? I feel far, far worse than yesterday, quite frankly. Cheers all, sure the Aussies will sleep well! It’s been another classic, and excellent to follow it with you all here. Do read and follow-up on my review later tonight, or tomorrow – and will see you all for live commenting in 9 days at Trent Bridge.

Superb work by Punter. And Warne – how well has he played in this series?

    On to Trent Bridge!

Awesome game – sorry I couldn’t join in on the comments. I am too superstitious to move in situatiosn like that!! Anyway, I got us over the line! Interesting comment about the momentum Will. I felt the same as I saw the Aussies running off pumping the air – seems crazy. This “positive” result could just put the Aussies in a better frame of mind – England won’t back off though.

In your Mr Badger, I might quibble about Jones and Flintoff only “looking threatening”. I think they were very much actually threatening.

  • Dave wrote:
    August 16th, 2005 at 10.35 pm

    Alan,

WHere did I write that? :lol I should know, but I can’t find it! Anyway, yes they certainly are threatening. Flintoff looks like he could take a wicket every delivery, and Jones can make the ball move either way at whim. They are bowling very well indeed. Thanks for reading!
