England v Australia, Old Trafford, Day Four

By Will 5 years ago, mid-August Add your comment below

Strangely defensive tactics by England today so far this morning. They surely can’t allow Warne his first Test hundred?

Gillespie has batted superbly, yet again. I wrote a piece at Cricinfo on his obduracy in the Lord’s Test, which is equally relevant today.

Hey Will. You are a bit late today!
Did you sleep in again or somthing?
Warney will get 150 and Dizzy his first hundred (touch wood)! Australia will have a first ininngs lead and it will be all good! ;)

Not enough time for that if Australia are still going for the win.

I’m crook today, feeling fairly rubbish so I’m in bed and not really relishing the play today. England don’t have any energy, much like me in fact

Bad luck with the footy hey Harry. Oh well, there is always next year!
Well i havn’t really worried about footy this year. Our school team is crap even with the two state under 16 players on it.
A couple of years ago my dad built us a cricket net in the front yard. Him and his mates laid the concrete and built the nets up around it. Its great being able practice cricket whenever i want. ( well when ever i can convince my little brother to come bowl to me.) And this winter we borrowed the bowling machine from my cricket club So that is how i have been spending my weekends. Except when there was no one to feed balls through the machine to me i had to pay my sister to do it And with the Ashes on T.V i don’t think i have watched a game of footy for about two months.
I was out there today with my brother feeding the balls through for me I had it going at 120km/h. I was batting crap though, must be somthing all Australians are going through at the moment. Except Warney of course He is a GUN!!!

This game isn’t yet wide open, but it’s getting that way. Momentum from England has vanished.

the only way australia have a chance of winning is if England properly go for the win themselves. What i mean is, if england are really making sure they win they’ll score really quick and declare quite early in order to give themself time to get Australia out. That is when the door opens for Australia. Are the prepared to chase 350-400 in a day? I’d rather seem then try and lose then see them not and get a draw.

dizzy just done an awesome shot! 6!

The lead is significant, but it’s the loss of yesterday’s play which has played into the hands of the Aussies (I feel). 144 ahead now. I reckon Australia would fancy chasing 300, but not much more, tomorrow…which of course means bowling England out for 150. Watch this space.

Strauss hit on the grill again, very nasty. He’s not picking up Lee’s bouncer at all, and nor is he in a position to hook him. Ooh, and it’s cut him! Get out of the way of the ball Straussy!

    5000 runs for Trescothick

I wonder if that romour about Warne and Ponting having a “disagreement” is true?
If so that catch through slips wouldn’t have helped things.

  • Scott Wickstein wrote:

Certainly looks like something is up. To be honest, I hope something did happen; plenty needs to be said, and no point mere bloggers saying it.

  • Harry wrote:

  • Scott Wickstein wrote:

On an internal team matter? You betcha! And rightly so. Whatever screaming matches take place, should stay private.

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 1.07 pm

Well you wouldn’t think that Gilly would lie about it. It’s probly just the english press looking for another way to put the aussies off. Remember when they said that Matty Hayden swore at some kid on the boundary when going out to bat? It is all just junk made up to sell papers.

  • Elliott wrote:

So whose do you think the catch was? Warne or Ponting? Mark Waugh is saying on FOX sports that he thinks it was Warnes catch…

  • Harry wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 1.18 pm

it was warnes but it was to pontings right so ponting could have taken it as well. Both should at least dived for it coz the way they are lined up they wont hit each other.

  • Elliott wrote:

Austrlia need a wicket and now.
Warne should be bowlin, we all seen the turn he was getting in that one over before lunch and thar wasn’t even out of the rough!
    Why isn’t Warne bowling?

  • Will wrote:

    Mere” bloggers, Scott? Mere?!

Actually this reminds me of a brief story. I was challenged by the security guard at work yesterday, who asked (in a round-about way) how Cricinfo could employ people who don’t play international cricket. In other words, how can we be an authority on the game? My response was that we are able to write fluently, effectively and elegantly about the game we love – on time, and under pressure. Cricketers play the game and we write about it. But he was still having none of it, and couldn’t understand why we didn’t employ Rashid Latif who could surely understand the game better than us…

Rather long aside there. 50 up for England, and Lee is bowling far too short.

  • Elliott wrote:

Well at what level do you play your cricket at Will?
I agree with you. International cricketers have enough to do without being under presure to write an article for a website.

  • Nick wrote:

You should ask that security guard whether it’s best ot have ex-international footballers commentating, or just someone who finds it their passion. “Er, well, Barry, I basically just stuck my foot out and luckily it went in the back of the net.”

Big up for Jones and his 6-for, by the way. It’s great for England to have two “rabbits” taking 9 of the 10 wickets – who would the Aussies want to face now?

  • Elliott wrote:

  • Will wrote:

A lucky wicket, was McGrath’s! He looks quite good today though. I know England are trying to seize the initiative, but I wish Vaughan would just play himself in for half an hour first. They don’t want to lose another two wickets which, at the moment, they are threatening their fans with…

well will, that security guard doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Anyone who follows the game as closesly as yourself has as good a knowlege of whats happening as (hodge takes catch!) the tom, dick, and harry (even this one!) I mean, if ex-cricketers always knew best, how the hell was dizzy chosen for this test match?

  • Harry wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 2.32 pm

“the next tom…”* This wicket would have maybe even helped england if they have sent in Flintoff or KP, if these to stay out for too long they could stuff England’s chances

  • Will wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 2.39 pm

True Harry, but I agree with Boycs and Atherton. Bell is not a bit-part player, he’s England’s number four and should be able to play whatever the circumstances. In the first innings, that meant knuckling down; in this innings, it means pushing the run-rate along. Whether he does it or not is up to him. Equally, if KP or Fred had come in ahead of him, and was quickly dismissed, this would have put even more pressure on Bell to score quickly. The right decision, says I…

  • Elliott wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 2.44 pm

Bit of luck there for Bell. Bail must be glued on?

  • dave wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 3.33 pm

We (Australia) will lose this by around 200 runs, unless rain intervenes. The only Australian batsmen who look capable of scoring a century at the moment are Warne and Langer. At least there’ll be a bit of a break to regroup.

Oh well, at least the Crows beat Port – eh Scott?

  • Will wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 3.33 pm

Astonishing that Gillespie is yet to bowl, isn’t it? Not injured, just severely out of form…and Ponting doesn’t (can’t?) trust him.

    How much is enough? 350 – 380?

  • Will wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 4.18 pm

Well, no less than 350 I reckon. I think they’ll want 400, which is perfectly gettable if KP and Fred get to the crease. Which isn’t too far off if Bell continues to hack and smote balls leg-side…

Loving that, Nick! And Gilchrist misses his second stumping of the day, as bad a miss as Jones’ yesterday. Oooh, in fact it was a dreadful miss.

  • Will wrote:
    August 14th, 2005 at 4.44 pm

Sean: yep, agree Re. MacGill. He should have played instead of Gillespie, whose selection was absolutely extraordinary (in my eyes). Decent leggies, like he and Warne, turn the ball on marble – England would far rather face Gillespie, who has again looked embarassingly poor. Apart from his batting, which was brilliant to watch.

Good knock, a nice hundred. But it is, once again, poor captaincy by Ponting. He has sat back all day waiting for England to make mistakes…and they’ve made just two (being the wickets). As poorly as Australia has bowled, he must surely take some credit for a truly arthritic display of captaincy.
