BBC commentators said (as Hoggard walked in to bat) that he would have done his job if he hangs around and gets out to the last ball of the match so that Freddie can have a go first thing in the morning. I dont believe that, though. I wont want him to face a relatively fresh McG and Lee with a new ball in hand, during the first half hour. If Hoggards, like Gillespie, had been around for this period, now that would have been perfect. Atleast thats how the Aussies plan.
England v Australia, Old Trafford, Day Two

I believe, you believe, we believe, they bel…no, I haven’t turned into a hippy, nor have I lost the plot. I’m just trying to spell. Rick picked me up on it, and I humbly apologise. Working for Cricinfo, see, it plays havoc with your spelling.
Enough waffling. Tomorrow, another day of Ashes-filled-fun is upon us. I think we all hoped this series would live up to its billing, but did any of us expect it to? Every single day has been utterly enthralling, even for the neutral or casual observer. It has, for us addicts, been thrilling, exciting, painful and brilliant viewing. What will day two of Old Trafford hold in store for us?
(this is being posted in advance as I mentioned earlier…)
Comment away, folks. Links, so long as they’re relevant to the series, are also welcome. I’ll try to contibute a bit more tomorrow.

Yes I agree, and that’s why I suspect Australia will fancy bowling England out for not much more than 400 today, if that. Unless Flintoff gets through Lee and McGrath, in which case 450 before lunch is fair game.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.08 am
Jonathan Agnew from the BBC also commented at the end of play, refering to Warne:
This will increase as the pitch wears during the game, so he might be a real handful if he bowls on the final day.
Warne bowling on the final day? Can any one please explain to me what he means by that?
August 12th, 2005 at 10.08 am
I want to see how McGrath is holding up after a full day in the field.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.19 am
I suppose it’s possible for Warne to be bowling on the last day if England make Australia follow on?
That’s a conundrum. If you were England captain and you could enforce the follow-on, would you avoid doing so because of the threat of Warne bowling on a really old wicket?
August 12th, 2005 at 10.26 am
Alan, Eng (or any other current team in the world) should make this Aus team follow only if they are ahead by, umm around 500 runs or so ! Else, forget it mate. Just bat, bat and bat. Set a target of 400-500+…and dont worry, this Aus side *cannot* play for a draw.
Anyways, very very early days yet…so horses securely held
August 12th, 2005 at 10.31 am
agree they should make australia follow on if in a position to do so, but australia can and have played for draws. Remember some time back Australia looked like having no hope of winning, but could draw quite easily, then Gilchrist came in and starting smashing it to all corners, then after a while steve waugh must have given him the message to give up when really Gilchrist could have one it for them (although it was a long shot). I was very annoyed that day.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.34 am
This seems like yet another key session, in this series they all seem like this.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.36 am
Harry…don’t remember this one…which match was this ? Anyway, point was that its really difficult for this Aus team to bat out a draw. Ofcourse they’ve done it a few time – Sydney test against Ind was one recently.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.36 am
Both teams should be thanked for the great show so far.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.37 am
Both teams should be thanked for the great show they have put on so far.
August 12th, 2005 at 10.41 am
Good Evening Fella’s!
August 12th, 2005 at 10.43 am
I am really set up 2nite!! I have the T.V sitting in front of the bed with a laptop next o me!
And straight away! Lee does it again! YAY
Comon Aussie Comon!
August 12th, 2005 at 10.48 am
Nice work Elliott!
August 12th, 2005 at 10.48 am
Worma, just indulging in a thought experiment prompted by a possible scenario of Warne bowling on the last day. Certainly not counting any chickens or letting any horses go!
August 12th, 2005 at 11.02 am
Right Alan, point taken. Btw whats with Clarke ? Read he’s back in hotel, resting. Are they talking about him on tv ? Can he bat ? What do the rules say, how low does he have to bat ?
August 12th, 2005 at 11.11 am
On the radio they are saying that Clarke can not bat until 7 due to some rule about being off the field a whole day.I don´tknow this law.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.14 am
hmm..7 should still be ok since they have 6 qualified batsmen to go above him. But they also said that it usually takes him 2 days to recover from such spasms.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.15 am
I think they said it was a rule specific to this series or somesuch.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.16 am
Yeah, i think i have heard of that sort of thing before! Its like the rule about when bowlers go off, after they come bak on they can’t bowl for a certain amount of time, depends on how long they were off for.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.17 am
I can´t see any serious problems with Clarke at 7 but if he bats at 7 today…
August 12th, 2005 at 11.21 am
They just mentioned Len Pasco on TMS. What is he up to these days?
August 12th, 2005 at 11.21 am
Alan, u mean there is an ICC rule specifically for this series ! Or is it an ‘agreement’ between the captains ?
August 12th, 2005 at 11.22 am
If Australia lose that many wickets to day i will eat my cricket bat!!
I don’t thinl they will need him to bat today.
Atleast i hope not…
August 12th, 2005 at 11.31 am
I HATE RAIN!!!!
Its the middle of winter over here and we have just had our three coldest days! And rain has been stopping me from getting my cricket training done!
August 12th, 2005 at 11.34 am
Here is a good site to check wheather it is going to rain for ages or if it is just a shower…
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/europe/uk/radar/
check it out!
August 12th, 2005 at 11.34 am
It was about 5.45am my time, so I wasn’t entirely rapt with attention because play hadn’t started, but I believe they said that rules of this kind are sometimes tweaked for different series, and they had Graham Gooch poring through the relevant volume….or I was hallucinating the whole thing in my sleep-deprived state.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.35 am
Alan, what city/town you from?
August 12th, 2005 at 11.37 am
Originally from Bristol, but presently based outside Washington DC…
August 12th, 2005 at 11.39 am
Really I’m in Fairfax,Va Small world.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.42 am
Really? Bleedin hell, we’re in Sterling now, but moved from Annandale in April. The reason for our move was not, I repeat not to be only 5 mins from the Old Dominion brewpub in Ashburn.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.42 am
So i’m talking to a bunch of poms living in america?!?
It can only meen trouble! ha ha
August 12th, 2005 at 11.42 am
These little breaks must help the Aussies, bowlers get a nice rest and the batsmen lose a bit momentum.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.43 am
Are you a native of the US?
August 12th, 2005 at 11.44 am
Yes, ever since 1776 I had a feeling they might be back
Well off to work. Enjoy the day folks.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.44 am
I am a Pom living in Spain
August 12th, 2005 at 11.45 am
Have a good one yourself.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.45 am
Alan. Yes, spent five years in Aust 1980-85 and fell in love with the game.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.48 am
Well it looks like i am the sole Australian here tonight/today (watever) Born and bread in the land down under! Best place in the world! (best cricket team as well!)
August 12th, 2005 at 11.48 am
It’s what I say, give somebody enough time and exposure and anybody who really loves sport will like cricket. Did you play in Oz at all, or just appreciate the spectacle?
I must admit baseball has grown on me slightly…particularly because of last years world series.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.51 am
Chris, Jones just smashed a Lee full toss for four
straight after the rain break. Maybe Lee’s radar was disturbed.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.53 am
Hey elliot, I’m a born and bread australian thats still living in Warrnambool, 3 hours away from Melbourne
August 12th, 2005 at 11.58 am
Alan As I said I have to get to work
..I did play in Aust. One of my teamates was Tim Nielsen who I think is a coach on the Aust team.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.58 am
Are you guys in the states watching the game of just listening?
August 12th, 2005 at 11.58 am
Yeah i thought you were Austrlaian Harry after wat you were saying last night. Its good to know i’m not completly alone.
I’m down on the north-west coast of Tassie in Wynyard, the town where Jamie Cox comes from. He sometimes comes up from hobart about once a season and does training with our club. He reckons he might come bacl one day and play for us agian. Imagine that!!! Batting with Jamie Cox!
August 12th, 2005 at 11.59 am
And I’m an ex-Melbournian now living in Brisbane.
My good wife has temporary control of the tv, so I’m limited to this and the Cricinfo commentary.
August 12th, 2005 at 11.59 am
Listening for me.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.01 pm
Gentlemen it’s been great but telling them at work I was listening to the cricket just won’t work as a reason to be late
August 12th, 2005 at 12.01 pm
TV? HA!! You jest.
Listening to TMS on the Beeb by Internet.
No chance of actual TV, could shell out for the Willow broadband for $100, but I’ll make do with the radio.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.01 pm
400 up pretty sharpish.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.03 pm
Should record it, Robert.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.03 pm
Same here in Spain only good old tms. Cricket must be the best sport on Radio.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.04 pm
What do you guys think about having katich open, dropping Hayden and bring in Hodge into the middle order?
August 12th, 2005 at 12.04 pm
Hooray, Gillespie is warming up.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.05 pm
Did Freddie and Jonesy have a chat during the break, and decide to up the tempo?
August 12th, 2005 at 12.08 pm
I really hope that Gillespie has control today. This test is his last chance before he will be dropped. and if that happpens i can’t really see him coming back in future series!
August 12th, 2005 at 12.08 pm
Another Aussie here – Geelong, a couple of hours closer to Melbourne than Harry.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.09 pm
I can’t see him playing another test again, as i’m sure no one else can. He’s getting a flogging.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.10 pm
Single, single, long hop-Flintoff 4,…sounds like a fairly defensive field, too.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.11 pm
Well i’m only 1 hour from melbourne if u go by plane!
Not the best first over from Gillespie. Not as bad as previous days though.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.22 pm
Did any of you get a good look at the Bell dismissal?
August 12th, 2005 at 12.22 pm
Who ever said anything bad about johnny howard is an idiot. Who cares how many wars he volunteers for or starts, he made sure we got the ashes!
August 12th, 2005 at 12.23 pm
OUT!!!! Warne gets his man. Very important wicket and could be a huge factor in the result of this test
August 12th, 2005 at 12.23 pm
IF Gillespie plays in the next test, I’m not watching it. I don’t understand how all the commentators can continuously point out the floors introduced into his action, yet no-one can do anything about it. They’ve alway said it’s even harder to get out of the Aus side than it is to get into it. This proves it.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.23 pm
Ah, Flintoff gone.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.25 pm
YAY YAY YAY!!!
Thats a fairly important wicket! Flintoff was starting to look dangerous then!
comon aussie!
August 12th, 2005 at 12.26 pm
Flintoff gone – that mishit would’ve been six last week. The Australian batting has a lot to proove in this innings. Are they up to it? The frame of mind of the whole side has to change ALOT.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.31 pm
Whadya know Gillespie bowls Jones.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.31 pm
YES!
That is amazing. That will help Gilliespie’s confidence after Lunch.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.31 pm
Good session, I’d say nearly even.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.35 pm
I was just calling for Dizzy’s head at The Ashes blog, and he goes and takes a wicket. Typical.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.43 pm
Good comeback from Australia. Yes I think Gilliespie will be lifted but McGrath is still a worry I think. Health wise that is.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.44 pm
Yes, it’s still a very good total by England but they’re a bit short. They had a wonderful chance to really make a massively dominating score, and also further depress Australia’s bowlers. With a poor forecast tomorrow (rain most of the day I think), England will want to snaffle out as many wickets as possible today.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.44 pm
(and that was a fine ball by Gillespie to bowl Jones – his best ball of the summer?)
August 12th, 2005 at 12.46 pm
I think that Gillespie’s decline is a bit too serious for the odd wicket here and there to mean keeps his place for the 4th test. I’d be very happy if he did.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.46 pm
Hard to see England losing from this position. It would take a self destructive second innings, hmmm? that sounds familiar – we can only hope.
August 12th, 2005 at 12.46 pm
Will,
I know there are no sure weather forcast but how right do they get it there? The chance of rain that is.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.03 pm
Stu, cricket is a funny game – anything can happen.
I studied in Manchester for 4 years, and it’s not called the rainy city for nothing. In Manchester, you don’t need a weather forecast. If it looks grey, it will rain!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.05 pm
Thats the thing with criket Stu, anything can happen, and it only takes a couple of hours for the game to turn around completly.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.08 pm
oopps.
sorry bout that wraye i hadn’t refreshed the page for a while when i wrote my last comment and we just happened to say pretty much the same thing. Great minds think alike i spoose
August 12th, 2005 at 1.09 pm
then another couple of hours to turn back in the other way. I’ll be praying the rain stays away because i don’t want know draws
August 12th, 2005 at 1.12 pm
If you are worried about the rain check out this radar
August 12th, 2005 at 1.15 pm
I tend to prepare myself for the worst, then am happy to be surprised. This is part of my learning to support an Australian team that is not thumping it’s opposition..it’s been about 15 – 16 years you know
August 12th, 2005 at 1.16 pm
YES YES YES!!!
602 and counting!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.24 pm
Thank God for that hey. I’ve been looking foward to seeing us bat!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.25 pm
Well done Warnie. Such a damn gun. Now this is where i get worried. Hayden, play bloody straight!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.27 pm
4-99, great stuff from Warne to clean up the tail. Quadruple Nelson for England…50 too short, I reckon, but they’ll have taken that score at the start of yesterday.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.28 pm
it’s that old Nelson got us again.
Own up – who had their feet on the floor? Huh?
August 12th, 2005 at 1.29 pm
Well done to who ever said 450 earlier. Right on the knocker! (more or less)
August 12th, 2005 at 1.30 pm
Mark Waugh on Fox trying to claim some sort of minor victory because England should’ve scored more, and they looked pleased with their efforts. I’ve never heard so much crap. England can be very pleased with that score. You don’t lose many matches after making 400 in the first innings. (Now before I get labelled defeatist
, I’m just saying I’d rather have 444 than be chasing it).
It’s a great test for Aus to chase this down. If we lose less that 4 wickets today we’re a big chance, but we need to bat better than we have been this series.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.30 pm
My feet were raised, and still are!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.34 pm
Yeah Mark Waugh is talking crap isn’t he. Him and jules are better than the sbs guys though.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.34 pm
Worrying signs for england there was yet another collapse in this test. It’s not such a problem if they keep winning but in the following matches they’ll want to be more careful, they did lose 8 wickets for under 150 runs if my memory serves me correctly
August 12th, 2005 at 1.36 pm
Yeah i didn’t think of that.
Well Done!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.42 pm
England need some of the luck they had yesterday – the way it looks, there could be a few half-chances for England to get the openers fairly cheaply, and they need to take them.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.45 pm
Lots of claims Hayden should’ve been out LBW – NONSENSE – missing leg, even “tigger finger” – I mean “hawkeye” says just clipping leg. Billy Bowden = great umpire!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.45 pm
Hey will, i was interested to see that when you were saying Vaughan is the most elegant player in world cricket, and named a few others that are up there, you left Martyn out of it. He is the most elegent player since Mark Waugh, and i would suggest more so than vaughan.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.46 pm
Welcome to the party Nick!
I think it is about time Australia get some of the luck. Its all gone englands way so far this winter(summer). And we havn’t seen a big partnership from Langer and Hayden yet and they are about due!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.47 pm
yep elliot, remember when aus were at their best and ponting would be coming in at 200 odd for 1? the good old days.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.48 pm
5000 runs for Langer and Hayden (in partnership). Not a bad effort
August 12th, 2005 at 1.48 pm
But Will is a Pom so he is never going to admit that there is an Australian that is better;)
August 12th, 2005 at 1.50 pm
Would you all agree with me when i say Langer has looked consistantly the best batsman so far this tour…? and perhaps should have gone on for some bigger scores?
August 12th, 2005 at 1.51 pm
i just want to be number 100!!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.51 pm
The best Australian batsman, Harry, yes…
August 12th, 2005 at 1.52 pm
In the style of the C4 commentators – afternoon Elliott, afternoon everybody.
Aussies had their luck at Lord’s when England had their dropsy day. So I guess it’s 1-1 in that respect…
Looks like they’re going for it. Not sure if this is the right tactic? Sure, it’s the way they play, but I don’t think they can dominate England in the way they’d be hoping to. Or perhaps they’re just targetting Hoggard?
August 12th, 2005 at 1.53 pm
i think he would be the most consistant out of both teams. Although Kevin Pietersons would go close, but he is South African, so he dosn’t count!
August 12th, 2005 at 1.54 pm
Hi Nick, enjoying the day? I don’t think Australia know any other way of playing…it’s hit out or get out
August 12th, 2005 at 1.54 pm
Sh*te, sorry about that! Didn’t mean to get the 100. Perhaps not deserved, now I’ll have to go on and make a big 200…
August 12th, 2005 at 1.56 pm
If it does not rain there could be a ruck of runs scored tis test
August 12th, 2005 at 1.58 pm
i think i must have two more coments than everyone else becasue here nick is 102 and i am 100. And the reponse counter at the top of the page is two behind the number on the bottom comment.
August 12th, 2005 at 1.58 pm
Hi Will, enjoying so far, wasn’t too pleased that the first ball I saw was Bell’s wicket. It’s bl**dy well set up, that’s for sure – here’s hoping for a quiet day at work.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.00 pm
Yes will i was meaning the best australian batsman. KP has been better and trescothic would go close too.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.01 pm
Hopefully it is englands time to put down some chances. Very tough one though there.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.04 pm
My comments total has just gone up now too, by 6!
When’s the best time for me to go to lunch? It’ll probably precipitate a fall of wickets, much like lighting a fag brings the certain arrival of the bus…
August 12th, 2005 at 2.05 pm
Did u hear them say that the Engand substitue fielder was born in Sydney!!!
They can’t win without us
August 12th, 2005 at 2.07 pm
well mine has fixed itself. check who was number 100 now?
August 12th, 2005 at 2.11 pm
Harry, according to mine.
Off for lunch, watch for a wicket or two
August 12th, 2005 at 2.18 pm
I’m heading off for the night. Got a big soccer game tomorrow, and a bit of work to do as well.
My prediction (or wild guess) for stumps: Australia 250 for 4.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.19 pm
I think we are going to see if this England bowling attack really is that good in the next few hours. On this wicket and with this batting lineup it looks like it´s going to be real hard work.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.23 pm
Well it all comes down to weather the Australian batting line up can find there old form, lets be honest none of then are really batting at there best so far this series. Then they will be able to really test the English bowlers.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.33 pm
Yes Elliot, but the same goes for a lot of the english batsman as well. Vaughan has only now found his feet, Flintoff has only had one good innings (like ponting), but yes australia have been more below par.
Langer has improved on facing the ball the swings back in to him from over the wicket. Caused hima lot of problems not long ago. I suppose if it was swinging a bit more he’d be struggling again
August 12th, 2005 at 2.40 pm
Well the first 50 seemed to come up quite easily! Hayden looks to be batting beter that at edgebaston and Langer is looking like that 80 odd he made last week.
Good signs for Australia!
Yes and i agree about Vaughan, but he has been inconsistant like that ever since he got the captincy.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.43 pm
This England attack is good and still getting better, if they all perform well (at the moment hoggard is failing) even this great Aussie lineup will have to bat well and chasing 444 there is not a lot of room for error.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.48 pm
Giles on. Could be interesting. I may be being overly-pessimistic, but I reckon the best we can hope is the odd Katich-style wicket.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.51 pm
that wasn’t katich style. That was bowled warne caught ponting style
August 12th, 2005 at 2.51 pm
Superb catch!
August 12th, 2005 at 2.52 pm
Speaking of ponting, he doesn’t like coming in to face spin straight away.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.52 pm
It certainly was interesting. But not in a good way.
So much for Ponting coming in at 1 for 200 hey Harry?
August 12th, 2005 at 2.53 pm
Oooh, I’m loving that catch by Belly! That is just pure instinct
August 12th, 2005 at 2.53 pm
oh well, hopefully martyn won’t be in until 300 is up.
August 12th, 2005 at 2.55 pm
Yeah, brilliantly proving me wrong – just after surprising him with The One That Didn’t Turn.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.00 pm
Welcome to Saturday everyone!
And you know wat that meens……
SLEEP IN!
August 12th, 2005 at 3.09 pm
Oh yeah Giles can bowl a bit too
August 12th, 2005 at 3.11 pm
Good stuff El!
Doesn’t always work though – remember last year I had a day off planned so stayed up all night with a few beers watching the deciding test of Australia v India at Sydney on Sky… only to be called at 6am to go into work because someone was ill.
Funnily enough, they didn’t believe I’d not been on an all-night bender.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.12 pm
for some time i’ve been telling my mates that ponting is completely hopeless at the sweep shot and that a very large percentage of the time when playing it he will go out. i can not understand how he would not have noticed this and given up the shot, i’m hoping he won’t be playing it today. And thats tea, slightly Australia’s day so far. Got england out for less than england would have wanted and made a steady start.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.13 pm
Some of us have to work on Weekends…even if it does entail watching the Test
August 12th, 2005 at 3.19 pm
If the Test Aus V Ind you are talking about was Steve Waughs last game then i was there. i went to all five days. India got 700 in ther first innings and the game was a draw.
Well no school on weekends so i can sleep. Gotta go to this part 2morrow night though so i wont be here till a bit later on like 11:00 AUS time.

Yes, Will, all depends on your definition of “work”, I guess…?!
To be fair, I’m working this weekend but will also be allowed (if not implored) to watch the match.
Nicely poised at tea. Another couple of wickets and at, say, 175/3 at stumps, England will be the happier.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.21 pm
when i wrote part it was actulla *party*
August 12th, 2005 at 3.23 pm
thanks to all these nutters in the office, I missed hearing most of todays play. Now, it’s tea time and I’m heading home PDQ.
Seems though like we are back to “normal” Test play instead of the frenetic stuff we have been treated to recently.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.23 pm
Had any of you guys picked that i was still a teenager before i mentioned school, or did u just think i was an adult?
This also explains the amount of typos i tend to make
August 12th, 2005 at 3.28 pm
I had you down as a 70 year old OAP Elliott
August 12th, 2005 at 3.29 pm
Not that there’s anything wrong with being 70, or an OAP…
August 12th, 2005 at 3.33 pm
Very Funny!
Extra long last session coming up. Time to test the…
DAMN!!
Not a good start. Hate to see a fello Tasmanian. Tea break strikes again!
August 12th, 2005 at 3.33 pm
Me too. I thought the typos were due to arthritis-induced problems with the keyboard.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.39 pm
Wow, what a start! And doubly great news for England, with their change bowlers doing well – Simon Jones looking solid, Giles probing away, and Harmison and Flintoff can be saved a bit. Hopefully Hoggard can get some swing too later and he can start pulling his weight. Looking good for England, this.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.44 pm
Typos are excusable – bad spelling and grammar aren’t! Seems the OBO guys are just as guilty (albeit via a quote): “…if his daughter really is Lily Savage, someone should let the terrace’s [sic] know.”
Hopefully a bit of confidence for Ian Bell too – decent innings and a couple of catches, one great.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.45 pm
Now wasn’t that weird?
He was trying to do a Brett Lee
August 12th, 2005 at 3.45 pm
Jones is reversing it wildly, it’s fabulous bowling, and he ought to have had Matthew Hayden just now.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.47 pm
YESSSS!!!!!
August 12th, 2005 at 3.50 pm
I think Hayden was a little unlucky against Giles. 82-3, Australia are wobbling again. And Katich was nearly out first ball, and dancing down the pitch second ball. That is not the way to play, in this situation, surely?
August 12th, 2005 at 3.51 pm
Ooh, all going England’s way. Did look outside the line at first, confirmed by replays – plumb as you like otherwise though.
Good thing is, is that Vaughan – and Giles – can afford to be attacking. Especially with Clarke crocked. Wonder if he’ll be ready tomorrow morning?
August 12th, 2005 at 3.53 pm
Australia should be sending 12th man around to drag clarke out of bed now, i dare say he’d be more useful than drinks.
August 12th, 2005 at 3.55 pm
Nick, apparently Clarke has taken two days to recover from previous back spasms, so he ought to be alright for tomorrow. Well – he might need to be, regardless…
August 12th, 2005 at 3.58 pm
I dunno! Not much use if he can’t walk?!?
About now you would be calling for the Super Sub
Then again maby not, i didn’t like those rules very much.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.01 pm
Back spasms are really just uncomfortable, nothing really more. So if it comes down to him needing to bat i think he will, after all this is a very important test.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.07 pm
He can’t bat until 7pm, due to the time he’s been off the field…and he’s at the team hotel at the moment, so I hope there’s not too much traffic!
August 12th, 2005 at 4.10 pm
The second 50 certaintly didn’t come with the ease and the painlessness of the first one.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.15 pm
Could be interesting Clarke & McGrath at the wicket – wonder when there last were two runners at the same time?
August 12th, 2005 at 4.17 pm
Will, so it was the time Clarke was off while the Aussies were fielding? Or does it count the time he’s in hospital?
What’s the rule re: McGrath – and bowlers in general – being off the field and not being allowed to bowl until a certain time?
August 12th, 2005 at 4.24 pm
Another couple of quick wickets and the Aussies are in all sorts of trouble, Clarke or no Clarke.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.26 pm
Not sure, Nick, shall let you know though…
August 12th, 2005 at 4.27 pm
Looked, and was, plumb – but only a small appeal. Funny – when he hit Martyn outside the line earlier, it wasn’t turning enough; then when he hits him in line, plumb, it’s going down leg. Hmmm…
Still, I guess it’s still only 1-1 in that respect
August 12th, 2005 at 4.28 pm
As sad as it is, chris makes a good point….
AARRRRGGGHHHHHH
August 12th, 2005 at 4.30 pm
This is fantastic! And now Freddie on fire vs Gilly – gonna be explosive!
August 12th, 2005 at 4.31 pm
Flintoff to Gilchrist has been *the* highlight of the summer (right from the ODIs) for me. Hugely important 20 minutes for Australia now. England need another slip and gully!!
August 12th, 2005 at 4.34 pm
They have called for reinfourcments from the hotel! Clarke is on his way! acorrding to the sky comentators.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.34 pm
When was the last time the Aussies had to follow-on?
August 12th, 2005 at 4.43 pm
YEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!
August 12th, 2005 at 4.48 pm
A Yank here who’s pulling for the Aussies after living in Brisbane for two years. What on earth is going on here? Aussies may be forced to follow-on! This is killing me.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.49 pm
I’m not sure that England would want Australia to follow on – going by the amount of turn Giles is getting out of the rough, they wouldn’t want to be playing Warne in the fourth innings at all. Get Australia out for 275 and set them a 350-400 target!!
Oh Lordy, Flintoff should have had Gilchrist yet again!
August 12th, 2005 at 4.51 pm
The very issue we were discussing as a almost certainly hypothetical situation this morning…incredible.
August 12th, 2005 at 4.54 pm
As a relative cricket newcomer, can anyone tell me if it’s ever *not* a brilliant atmosphere for cricket?
August 12th, 2005 at 4.58 pm
Clarke has arrived. Warnes going to make 40 odd, gilchrist a big ton and clarke a half century, australia get themselves back in this game. And Harry potter was named after me!
August 12th, 2005 at 4.59 pm
and pigs fly
August 12th, 2005 at 5.00 pm
Here you go lads, “player absent of leaving the field”.
Law 2.5c if he is absent for 15 minutes or longer, he shall not be permitted to bowl thereafter … until he has been on the field for at least that length of playing time for which he was absent.
August 12th, 2005 at 5.03 pm
Channel 4 have just produced an interesting statistic, which is that Australia haven’t been forced to follow on for 17 years (1988, Karachi v Pakistan for those anoraks among you).
From the Guardian OBO
August 12th, 2005 at 5.06 pm
hi BP, come and watch some cricket in Germany and that will answer your question – you can sometimes count the spectators on one hand.
August 12th, 2005 at 5.08 pm
you know i reckon warne could have been an alrounder if he really wanted to be.
August 12th, 2005 at 5.13 pm
Is that 15 minutes in total? Or just 15-minute in one spell?
Warney’s got a bit of batting confidence from playing club cricket here – he’s got a couple of centuries, the first of his career – and England are on the receiving end.
August 12th, 2005 at 5.14 pm
they forgot the centenary Ashes series in 1977, 4th Test at Headingley.
England 436 all out. Aus first innings 103 all out 333 (that Nelson again). Second innings 248 all out. Mike Brierly was captain and we regained the Ashes.
August 12th, 2005 at 5.18 pm
if he is off the field for more than 15 mins in one go.
By the way, last post should have read 103 all out needing 333.
August 12th, 2005 at 5.44 pm
Lets see what clarke can do?
August 12th, 2005 at 5.56 pm
Plenty of short balls to Clarke, get him jumping around and ducking…
August 12th, 2005 at 6.03 pm
wouldn’t it be great if these two can make it to the end of play, then michael stay out there tomorrow while warnie brings up his 1st ever test century?…in the same test that he brings up 600…and just as i say that clarke goes.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.05 pm
Clarke goes to the slower ball again.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.07 pm
Nicely done Harry, fancy Lee and Warne to repeat their (almost) heroics of Edgbaston? Please say yes!
August 12th, 2005 at 6.08 pm
Yeah, it’s a shoe in
August 12th, 2005 at 6.10 pm
I’m actually hoping we fall 3 runs short again, our best chance i think is batting again, trying to get to 400, then bowl england out for under 200. Not impossible and warne will be a real handful on this pitch.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.12 pm
Australian optimism, don’t you love it?! It’s not a bad thought actually, Harry…
August 12th, 2005 at 6.15 pm
Reckon we’d put the Aussies in?
August 12th, 2005 at 6.16 pm
I wouldn’t.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.17 pm
Well i know what i’d be doing if i was Vaughan. Batting, make at least 300, and then you’ve at the least got a draw.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.18 pm
But making at least 300 isn’t that straightforward – see Edgbaston.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.21 pm
It’s still the safest option. With a lead of 200, even making 150 keeps you in the drivers seat. Although, Vaughan might want to put the aussies back in just because he can for once. You know, be cheeky, rub it in.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.23 pm
Another marvellous day of cricket. This series is comfortably a classic already. 210-7 represents some shoddy Australian batting, but some excellent English bowling. Roll on Saturday – except the weather will have a say, as it’s set to rain……
August 12th, 2005 at 6.23 pm
I would make them follow-on, another hit to Aussie pride.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.23 pm
Come on then, who’s going to be the double-centurion?
August 12th, 2005 at 6.24 pm
Dunno, you can’t guarantee anything – I thought I was the centurion!
August 12th, 2005 at 6.26 pm
Well i’m going off to bed.
Remember, there’s still a little hope for Australia.
August 12th, 2005 at 6.26 pm
well hang on, thats both the centurion and the double!
August 12th, 2005 at 6.34 pm
G’night to the Aussies…
August 12th, 2005 at 6.42 pm
Forecast is for rain to-morrow and Monday…
August 12th, 2005 at 6.45 pm
It’ll all be over in time for a Sunday roast!
And congrats, Harry, though i do feel a little cheated out of my century….
August 12th, 2005 at 6.52 pm
Gogg night everyone. I just dozed off for a bit there. I hope Harry flew the aussie flag in my absense.
See everyone 2morrow!!
