England v Australia, Old Trafford, Day One

By Will 5 years ago, mid-August Add your comment below

I’m posting this “in advance” of Thursday’s Test at Old Trafford, as I need a lie-in in the morning and might miss the start of play. Lee looks set to play; MacGill looks set to miss out. One all with three to play – it can’t get better than this, can it?

Comment away, folks.

Well as long as Ricky Ponting has a better look at the pitch this time then they should be right!!!

This could be the most important test Australia has played – in terms of the impact of losing it – in 15 years. (Now that’s straight off the top of my head, so I’m sure some with bring up other Tests.)

Lazing in bed? England expects every man to do his blogging, young Will.

You don’t see Steve Waugh having a lie-in when the Ashes are at stake, do you..

My blogging will be low key as well but thats coz I’m working right through the weekend :( Not sure that I’ll actually get to see much play and blog posts will be short as well.

Will, how can you play slug-a-bed when there’s a Test on, man? Last week, I was lucky to be home for all 4 days, now I’m back in the office, moan groan.

Will post as/when I can – so long as the boss doesn’t catch me out!

You think you will be in bed!!!! Try watching the Ashes from down here in Australia! Play Starts at 7:30 PM and finishs about 3:30 in the morning! So when am I supoosed to sleep?

I guess England are wanted to make Glenn and Brett bowl as soon as possible to test them, not wanting to give them another day. Should be interesting to see how they go. Have they been rushed back, particurly Glenn? we’ll see

  • Elliott wrote:

No MaGill! probly a good thing the way the pitch has turned out. With McGrath and Lee back, England should be worried batting first!

  • Wraye wrote:

Tresco gets lucky second ball … this is going to be fun! McG doesn’t seem to have lost much of his touch after that first over.

It’s like McGrath never had left! his balls to tresco are like replays of one another. the mind boggles. or is boggled. or something.

I hate to point out (not really ;-) …that I was expecting McGrath to play…check out my comment in that post ! I’ve seen him ‘recover’ surprisingly quickly earlier also. And now I have a stronger feeling that this is part of Aus strategy to throw opponents off-guard.

I’d like to see Vaughan get forward a bit further. I can see a replay of Lords and Edgbaston at this rate. A question for my antipodean friends…. do you get the channel four feed or the sky one?

  • Sean wrote:

Apparently he has a history of back trouble. It happened as he threw off balance – doesn’t sound too serious but you don’t mess around with that part of your body.

  • Harry wrote:

Very much the impression I got Harry. I used to talk to a bloke on Yahoo about five years ago called Michael NSW who said he played cricket for New South Wales and one day he would play for Australia. I never really believed him but I’m beginning to wonder now.

Either way I reckon, with the possible exception of Pietersen, he is the batsman I have enjoyed watching most this series so far. If his back holds out surely he must score thousands of test runs.

Elliott, I got the impression that Australians didn’t like his style of commentary. I think he adds something to C4’s commentary. I’m afraid Mark Nicholas gets on my t1ts – he’s so over the top sometimes – Slats is good though.

  • Elliott wrote:

I watch Sky as well cause our pay tv comes via satelite so it has a really clear picture, and there are less adds on the pay tv.

I think Flintoff could probly start on the back foot before Lee even starts his run up!

Slats was my favourite player. I loved the way he was likely to smack the 1st bowl of the day for four, or take on any bowler. More people would take Steve Waugh’s side but i’m with Slater

I have said it so many times on this Blog already! No-balls are not excusable. Why do they have to get so close to the lines? It’s cost us in previous test matches greatly, why won’t they learn!?

  • Stu wrote:

  • Stu wrote:

Well it certinly isn’t the same Austrlaians we have been used to over the last couple of years. It’s not offten Adam Gilchrist drops a catch-let alone two in one day!?!- and i’m not sure that McGrath even knew wat a no-ball was untill this seiries!

  • Stu wrote:
    August 11th, 2005 at 1.47 pm

This is SO frustrating. Ponting in not captaining well at all. Just more of the same, over and over again. Nothing is being tried, and how can you possibly have a bowler with 599 test wickets, 100 in England, with the score at 1 for 130 and not have bowled him yet???

  • Sean wrote:

  • Elliott wrote:

Yeah. Its good to see some proper test match batting rather than the one-day display all players (except Langer) showed at Edgebaston.

  • Sean wrote:

I remember when Langer came to England to play club cricket at Dover in 1991 I think. He scored something like 1000 league runs, a record which still stands.

I think 350 is about right, Chris. It remains to be seen whether (or when, or if) the pitch will deteriorate at all..it certainly looks great for batting. Australia’s bowlers, McGrath and Warne aside, don’t look crash hot today, despite the road-like pitch

  • Harry wrote:

yes elliot, certainly. I’m the biggest fan of ponting there is, but i think he’s listening to much to the media and the groundsman and who ever about the state of things, instead of just judging for himself. They tell him the pitch isn’t good for spinners, but it looks perfectly fine to me, so McGill doesn’t play. If ponting wanted McGill in the team, he’d be in there.
Also, if you really don’t want another spinner, at least pick the next best quick. kasper has been better than dizzy, then tait would at least be someone the english aren’t used to.

  • Sean wrote:
    August 11th, 2005 at 2.54 pm

what an innings for vaughan. He did say he felt a big one was coming up, but I doubt if he meant a big chancy one. But heck, luck is as luck does (does that make any sense), and he must conver this to the first tone (!) of the series. England should surely look at reaching a score where they cannot lose from. Early days, I know…but after that first 30min-1hour, the bowling has not troubled them too much has it…..

Its a disgrace that he has to get the first ton of the series! He has probly been nearly the worst batsman of the seiries so far. If it HAD to be an englishman than it could of atleast been flintoff or pieterson but not vaughan!

on the contrary – it was well past time Vaughan got his form back – a captain needs to put in a good innings with the bat as well as in the field to inspire his team. How else can he retain their respect?

and, what a statistic- after that exquisite shot, england have a total of 21 sixes in the series. Australia- wait for this- have….2

Oops – I hope Vaughan’s not let Aus back in here – if Lee & McGrath can nip KP & Freddie out before the close they’ll be delighted. I’m assuming they’ll take the new ball.

300 for 3 boring, slow cricket from england again

C’mon KP – play for stumps.

Didn’t know Lee was such a nice boy! Obliges immediately! Sad to see KP go though…

Not sure how sensible that was 3 overs before stumps but I guess that’s the way he plays. Big result for Aussies and well directed from Lee

well, what a surprise, blue boy KP catch at deep mid-wicket – just like at Lords, just like at Edgebaston. Sigh.

    McGrath’s bowling in the 72-74mph range – what’s up?

what a great end to the day. last ball, again. great ball, again. wicket,…again. It leaves the aussies on a high, but it is still England’s day…hats off to Lee and Warne. stuck to their task. unecessary shot from KP, irrespective of ‘how he plays’…
more conventional cricket, and still riveting

  • akr wrote:

and nk- except for the initial half hour or so, McGrath has looked a little off colour- not at optimal. Whether it is just and off day or the niggle, can’t say…

I’m not too enamoured with KP’s shot but I’m livid with Vaughan. He could have just played normally and been 190 – 200 odd not out at the close. Fancy hitting a full bunger from a part timer straight down long on’s throat. Remember NZ earlier this year – 300 odd for 3 at close of play then ended up losing by 9 wickets. You can’t give these guys anything.

  • akr wrote:
    August 11th, 2005 at 6.22 pm

yeah, that too. Only at some level the guy *did* score 166 so you think, fine- he was gutted, and it happens with part timers. KP’s on the otherhand, was plain irresponsible. and I don’t buy the ‘thats the way he plays take it or leave it stuff’. nah.

I would say honours even, as far as the match position goes, but I feel (trying not to show too much Pom bias :) ) that England have some momentum from Vaughan’s return to form and Bell’s determination (I’d say he’s our new Barrington but you’re all too young to remember him :) ) – McGrath however is a passenger in the field and if either he or Lee were to break down to-morrow or in the 2nd innings would anyone be surprised?

  • akr wrote:
    August 11th, 2005 at 6.33 pm

I would, actually. (be surprised). esp if it was Lee. McGrath, one would like to believe, hasnot been rushed into the match ahead of his recovery- that would be plain foolish. I suppose even he is alowed an off colour day, no?
honours even? not so sure. england have the edge I should think. but then, who can say what about this series.

Spot on, AKR. Incidentally, as much as I enjoy writing AKR, I’m looking forward to you revealing your real name :)

Honours even? Just about. Bell’s innings was outstanding, I felt – considering how rough he’s had it this series so far. Vaughan was majestic, brilliant and all the other adjectives we use when he scores runs. I hope this is a turning point, because there is no other batsman in the world who is more elegant when in full flow, and I include Dravid, Tendulkar, Ponting and Lara in that list!

It’s all down to Flintoff, though, again. He and Bell need to put on a solid, patient innings tomorrow morning…then Fred can go beserk. Australia will reckon that if they can dismiss one of those two, they could be batting quite quickly.

Eng need another 200 runs, and Australia need to be batting (from their point of view) by lunch, or soon after.

Thanks for all the comments, they’re great – and sometimes hilarious – to read! Keep them coming for tomorrow, should be another cracker. I’m working Fri, Sat and Sun so shan’t have much time to contribute my reviews and thoughts…but I’m sure you’ll be happy just commenting amongst yourselves

    ’til tomorrow,

    Will

And just to respond to the vicious attacks regarding my sleeping. I get home late from work during match days, about 10pm, so I’m entitled not to wake up until at least 10am!

    Sheesh. On that note…

This has been a series full of drastic shifts in momentum, so my money would be on Australia bowling England out for not much more than 400 this morning.
Looking forward to seeing how Australia do with the bat, however!

A drastic shift in momentum towards Australia would be great, avinash. But if the luck is with us then, will it disappear when our batsmen walk out to the crease?

  • Sean wrote:

This morning will be crucial to the outcome of the match and, unfortunately, I can see England getting bowled out for 420 odd which won’t be enough IMO. Aussie batting is due to fire and they have the pitch on which to rack up 600+. Therefore 500 is the minimum requirement from England today.

Forgot to add that I won’t be in for most of today. I have a job interview this morning and then my wife and I are going to the races this afternoon as it is her birthday. In fact she is watching the harness racing from Wagga as we speak – and they say cricket is boring……….
