Actually I got it wrong; according to one of the Sky guys he’s doing one of the NatWest Challenge games as well. I’ll have to learn to not trust The Guardian….

Ah right. I also heard Shep was offered to officiate in the Lord’s Test. Malcolm Speed was willing to drop the “no home umpires” ruling for one game – but Shep didn’t want to. “too much fuss” which just about sums up the character of the man. Great shame – he would have received a great ovation at Lord’s. Although, I seem to remember Dickie Bird having trouble umpiring his last game due to the tears welling up!

Mr Shepherd’s retirement is like the end of a chapter to all our lives. He seems to have always been there. He has maintained the highest standards of the greatest of all games. If any umpire is ever in doubt he must just ask wwsd (what would shep do?)
