England v Australia - 20/20 wicket updates

By Will 3 years ago, mid-June Leave a comment on this post

OK so the first mickey-mouse game of the summer, and the first game of this absurdly-exciting series, gets underway tomorrow, in 23 and a half hours time. 20/20 all but passed me by last season - but I did catch a glimpse of Surrey’s win (I think it was Surrey?), and I’m sure I’ll enjoy them this year. I’m still a purist (”Test Cricket is the only true test of a player’s ability” et al), but ODIs have brought great entertainment - and it’s been fascinating to see 20/20 take off.

Although, Australian coach John Buchanan has just stated his concerns over the 20/20 format: I wonder whether his opinion of it will change come September?

I’ll be providing wicket-alerts (and score updates) of this game by email - if you want to receive updates, just leave a comment below. Incidentally, I intend to offer DVD-recorded highlights of Ashes games this year, as I spoke about in February, starting from tomorrow.

Well, I suppose it depends on what you think 20/20 is for… if Buchanan’s concern is that people will start to think that the result of a 20/20 game matters in terms of the prowess of the teams generally, he’s right - and no one wants to see key Test players get injured playing 20/20. (Well, no one wants to see players get injured full stop, but I hope my meaning is clear.) One possibility might be for the ICC to rule that once you’ve played, say ten Tests, you can’t play a 20/20 international.

I don’t know about that, but agree the amount of ODI cricket just needs to be reduced, it’s that simple. The game is becoming so obsessed with the commercial side of it, and the ODI format provides so much revenue. What to do? As a spectator, I love all this cricket: it’s almost year-round nowadays, serving my appetite very nicely. But when you consider players like Abdur Razzaq, in their mid-20s, have played several hundred International ODI matches, you have to wonder whether it’s overkill.

    Hi,

discovered your blog by accident and have now added it to my favourites. Well done, mate! Good stuff.

Am a female, cricket-loving ex-pat scorer living in Germany. And yes! there is a lot of good cricket here and please check out our website, tho’ I cannot keep it as up to date as you do with your site.

Am really interested in your DVD offer - will pay! will send DVDs. Have no Sky and no chance of simple Internet connection to Germany. Please get in touch!

    Best regards,

    Wraye

    Hi Wraye - guten abend!

I won’t speak any more German for fear of embarassing myself. I spent a few months in Germany with some friends, about 6 years ago, and tried to teach them the rules. I failed - miserably!

Anyway, you’re more than welcome to have a DVD. I’ve just finished doing the highlights of the 20/20 game (which England won - in case you hadn’t heard), as well as the Tsunami game. The only problem is compatability - I don’t know if it’ll work on your DVD player. But it’s worth a go. If you can send a blank DVD or two, a self-addressed jiffy bag and maybe 2 or 3 pounds (via PayPal?) to cover postage costs, we’ll give it a go. Email me: stumps @ cricket . mailliw . com (without all the spaces of course)

    Chuß,

    Will

PS: if anyone else is interested, shout.
