Cricket in the park for The Ashes

By Will 3 years ago, mid-June Leave a comment on this post

UPDATE: 31 August 2005, the clapham common venue has been changed to Regent’s Park. More info here.

UPDATE (August 18 2005): The ECB have extended Cricket in the Park to include the fourth and fifth Tests. See here for more.

UPDATE (August 16 2005): There are no Cricket in the Park events planned for Nottingham or London, for the fourth and fifth Tests against Australia. See this post for more details.

This is a great idea, although I wonder why it hasn’t been done before.

Entry to these events is completely free, and will offer you a Test match atmosphere without having to be at the ground, with big screens for fans to watch all the action on.

And with opportunities as well to take part in different cricket games and activities, the big screen events will offer the ideal setting to watch the contest unfold.

I might well go to Regent’s Park - sounds like a brilliant day out:

    London - July
In Regents Park for the Lord’s npower Ashes Test Match - July 22/23

    Birmingham - August
In Cannon Hill Park for Edgbaston’s npower Ashes Test Match - August 5/6

    Bristol - September
In Queen’s Square for the Old Trafford npower Ashes Test Match - August 12/13

It almost makes me want to forgive them for selling the TV rights to Sky. Almost…

Yes, Andrew - almost. But not quite. It’s a disgrace

This was done a few summers ago with Channel 4 sponsoring ‘Indian Summer’ - full day of cricket on the big screen followed by load of Bollywood music and the like. Cracking day out if the weather holds

Does anyone know if this is definitely still happening?

Fab idea -will be there! Re ALMOST forgiving cricket authorities for selling rights to sky: Imagine we DO regain the ashes & become officially the best test side in the world - only you can’t watch the best side in the world on terrestrial tv!! A disgrace doesn’t begin to describe it, next summer there should be a revolt!

Ami, yes it’s still happening - it was officially confirmed yesterday.

Nigel - that’s a very big “IF” but I agree with the sentiment!

I think selling out to Sky was a fabulous idea. Let’s face it the coverage is more polished, and the more money that flows in the better. Anyway see you all at Regents Park for what promises to be an abolute humdinger!

I can’t wait now it’s been confirmed, already had tickets but unfortunately couldn’t go as I had to sell them to aussies for a massive profit! Will make up for it though by getting v drunk there and hopefully getting involved in some top banter and really messing up some convict scummers!! E I E!

Would expect it to kick off in a big way by tea time after a skinful of stella. Bad news about Tressers btw.

Graham, you better get there on Friday if you want to start dishing out some banter… by the weekend all you’ll have to talk about is what selection changes to make for the second test…

  • Kevin Lynch wrote:

True. I reckon by Saturday lunchtime the Aussies will have announced Bichel for Warne and Slater for Hayden for Edgbaston.

    Very dissapointing indeed

Shocking, y no cricket in the park for the old trafford test? Is ther no parks around? Tatton Park is a resonable size park is it not?

  • Jason wrote:

Mike - after the recent game, i guarantee that even the most footie orientated bars will be showing the test, and generating a cracking atmosphere. In London, we’re resigned to a pub to watch it and wouldn’t have it any other way mate

Fair comment, but there is parks available im sure in manchester

Hi - just been on to the ecb webiste and I can’t believe they are showing the Old Trafford test on big screens in BRISTOL….why??? I thought Heaton Park would be the ideal place. I may have to go anyway and tune in to test match special instead

Is there a big screen in a park for the Trent Bridge 4th Test Match v Australia

  • Shakey wrote:

Big Screen in Bristol shock horror! “why not Manchester” some say - howabout because the South West doesnt get a test at all (although E V A one day crowd at Bristol’s County ground exceeds several test venues) so just see the Big Screen here as ‘grums from the table’ you spoilt northerner. Why not take alook at the distribution of test venues on a map and see how precious initiatives such as a Big Screen in the provinces can go along way to promoting the game beyond the smog.

There is no Cricket in the Park for the fourth of fifth Tests. It remains to be seen whether the ECB will respond to a nation gripped by Ashes fever…email the ECB and tell them you want more cricket in the park!

Is there a big screen event planned for Nottingham as at London, Edgbaston, Bristol.

Please advise as I would love to go to Nottingham for the match but can’t get tickets unless I win the lottery !

    Thanks - Andy

I was one of the 20,000 diappointed for the old trafford test, which a cricket in the park wud hav been useful for. I hav emailed the ecb 3 times and no reply.

I got the following reply from the ECB when I mailed them about Manchester -

    Hi Madeleine
Think there was difficulty in finding a suitable and available venue; so
we decided to buck the trend and take it to another city.

    Best wishes
    ECB Feedback

Not exactly useful hey?!! If we all keep mailing maybe they’ll buck the trend again and make sure there are some big screens at least somewhere in the country!
