Collingwood as a Test batsman?

By Will 5 years ago, mid-June Add your comment below

I recorded Extra Cover (Sky+ is essential for any cricket fan – it’s pretty much all I use it for, perhaps I’ll call it Cricket+) which I’m watching now, and Charles Colville is interviewing Paul Collingwood. I’m a fan of Colly’s, although not sure he quite has it at Test level. They’re mainly talking about his being pigeon-holed as an ODI specialist (like Fairbrother, Moody, Knight, Bevan etc). I’m too knackered to offer my opinion, so it’s up to you: is he in the running for a post-Thorpe batting slot?

From where I see it, the hulabaloo (did I just write that word?) over Pitersen as opposed to Bell and Key is pretty much enough. Does Collingwood really get a look in there?

It is a very comon typecast though, isn’t it? The No.5, or more likely, No.6/7 in the ODI lineup is a ODI specialist. Of course, given that most batsman at the position usually come in and need to whack the ball immediately, pinch singles, chaperone the tail, up the momentum, complete a chase- any or all of these; given that, it is most liikely that a technically sound batsman in this post may well be pigeon holed. Kaif from India, for one, was in danger of being done in but now is a serious contender (or at least permanent/serious ‘on the lines’ man for the Test side. Amongst the others, Bevan was the only one who the test chances and looked the part but never eally managed to make his own place.

Colly’s bowling isn’t nearly good enough to push him ahead of Bell, Key, Pietersen (?Joyce) in the batting queue. Top fielder though, and apparently is good mates with Harmison to keep him cheerful (didn’t work in SA though did it?)
