Alec Stewart replacing Dermot Reeve

By Will 4 years ago, at the end of May Leave a comment on this post

Although I hated Reeve’s commentary, he did at least have some semblence of a sense of humour. Alec Stewart, cricketing-hero of mine that he is, alas has not. He hasn’t the dry wit of Benaud; the rudeness of Boycott; the fake-glamour of Mark Nicholas or the charm of Atherton. He’s really bloody dull, and on your screens all summer folks! Expect plenty of “Well, at the end of the day,” “To be honest,” “ballpark score,” “absolutely,” or any other equally pointless cliche.

I remember when they interviewed him and Atherton during their 100th Test about future plans - Atherton talked for some length about his writing, owrking in the media etc and Stewart was just ‘Um, yeah, the media would be good, yes.’ Might be interesting if he and Athers are paired together in the commentary booth at some point though.

Yes - “resuming their opening partnership” was meant to be the title of my post :) He’s [Stewart / Gaffer] ok in a relaxed environment, but when put on the spot (as he will be), it’ll be cliches galore. Fine player, one of my heroes, and I’ll never forget the century he made (and the ovation he received) on his 100th Test…that was unforgettable.

he has served his dues with a spot of commentary for five live etc so he can’t be all dull. Better than Dermot ‘they aren’t shining the ball enough’ Reeve

And he’s guaranteed to turn up, too!

Stewart is awful. I agree wholeheartedly with Will and Nick. What’s more, he’s now the agent of half the England team. What a blatant conflict of interest! As if his intelligence-insulting blandness and dullness was not enough. He was once the No. 1 batsman in the world but allowed the brainless public school toffs at the ECB to ruin his batting by turning him into a second rate wicketkeeper / batsman. There must be someone better. I increasingly think that if we could only get a decent media to dissect our national sporting failures success would not be far behind.
