Shep’s leaving at 8.55

Great shame - David Shepherd, portly Devon umpire, is hanging up his white coat and flat cap.

Shepherd’s last Test will be the second match between West Indies and Pakistan in Jamaica next month.

And his final international match will be a one-dayers between England and Australia at The Oval on 12 July.

I hope he gets a good farewell including a guard-of-honour on the 12th July. It wasn’t long ago that he fell over - much to my shameful amusement. More on him at the Beeb, and in my Devon tag. One of cricket’s great characters, inspiring thousands to stand on one leg at any mention of 111… & I love this photo:
