In all sporting endeavour there is a subconcious element to fine control or co-ordination. The positive attitude:”I am going to hit this….”, as in 1 day cricket, is akin to the running forehand or back hand of the tennis player, the catch that caught out Pieterson, or tossing waste paper into the basket with one’s left hand while doing something completely different.
These moments of excellent co-ordination are not aberations but are perhaps moments of complete removal of any inhibitary element of brain function.
There is much talk about “a well crafted innings”, “Playing the 5 day game is not one day cricket” etc. Frankley if each man in the England team had played their first innings with a ‘one day’ attitude to accumulating runs, they could not have done much worse, and I strongly suspect rather better.
There is no problem with technique, English teams need to work on ways to use that subliminal aspect of brain function, basically it has got to be more fun. Perhaps they should concentrate more on increasing the ‘thud’ of leather on willow or the ‘wizz’ of the ball air.
