ICC leaves Lord’s

BBC SPORT | Cricket | Cricket chiefs move base to Dubai

Can somebody explain why, please? “operating in the United Kingdom under the current system is not in the best interests of our members” - but Dubai is? Dubai has a mish-mash of representative teams, including the UAE. So they’ve decided to move the headquarters away from Lord’s, the spiritual home of cricket, just for neutrality purposes? These kinds of decisions do irritate me. It’s clearly a tax problem - UK firms get taxed to the heavens, so perhaps Dubai is cheaper. That’s the only explanation I can offer.

Typical, bullshit bureaucracy - change for change’s sake.

It is for a tax purpose and nothing to do with neutrality etc. It was decided around 2-3 months back and news has resufaced again. Dubai is tax free

It is surely for tax reasons. I dont have the link offhand, but it has been often said (by the powers that be) that their biggest reason is to enjoy tax reliefs. Anyway I think legally the moneys of the ICC happen out of Monte Carlo for the same reason, so this is not much of a surprise. Loss of tradition, but mot much of a surprise.

Yes, having looked into it further I see it’s all a tax decision. I’ve calmed down now :)

umm a little more than that. the uk government did not honour its earlier promise of tax concessions. see http://cricket24×7.blogspot.com/2005/01/icc-all-set-to-move-to-dubai.html

of course, i fail to see why a profit making body should be given tax concessions at all. the icc has threatened india with not being allowed to host a single icc event since the govt is not giving the bcci tax concessions on events/games hosted here. surely if you’re making so much money, you shouldnt be given any tax concession.

tax was the reason the IRB (international rugby board) is based in Dublin and not London.
