Bill Frindall sticks his neck out on Harmison

Playfair Cricket Annual

I don’t know if non-British people reading this blog read Bill Frindall’s Playfair annual, but if not then you’ll almost certainly have heard his familiar, languid and slightly depressing voice on the radio. He is the statto’s king, and his Playfair annual is a genuine must-buy for all English fans. Small, pocket-sized & cheap - great for train journeys, and conspicuous enough to read it in public without being laughed at!

Anyway. His 2005 annual is available for pre-purchase (click on the cover above), and each year a different English player is featured on the cover. He spends (as far as I know), quite some time deliberating over who should be on it: I think the requirement is, in the main, “Who do I think will make the biggest single contribution on the summer’s international season?” Thing is, Frindall’s jinxed us and the player in question on numerous occasions. Thorpe, Ramprakash, Fraser and many more have all fallen foul of the Frindall-crystal-ball - and this year, Bill’s outdone himself by choosing none other than Stephen Harmison.

Frindall - what are you playing at? We all know England need Mr Harmison back to his lethal best - and, come on, he’s not exactly Beckham-esque in terms of loving the cameras. We will not forgive you if you are wrong. We will love you if you’re right.

Here’s my idea. When psychologists are dealing with patients, one of the techniques they use is t o destroy a patient mentally before rebuilding it. Harmison’s confidence is shot. So as the public we must totally get his confidence so low that he doesn’t even wanna play cricket and then we build his confidence by playing him the ashes test matches without him playing a single county or international game. What do you think?

Maybe it’s all just reverse psychology - the Aussies will think he’s shot (maybe they’ll order him to bowl badly against Bangladesh, or drop him) and then he can come back and skittle them out repeatedly in the Ashes.

I can dream, can’t I? It’s part of my grand Ashes plans which culminates wih England needing 6 to win off the last ball at the Oval, nine wickets down, series level at 2-2 and Flintoff on strike. I think you can guess the ending.

What? 6 consecutive no-balls from McGrath… now that would be amazing.

I have similar, wholly realistic & grandiose Ashes plans - but in my dreams, I’m the bowler needing to take that final wicket. Yes, I’m that disturbed. Ponting on strike but they’re 9 down, 3 needed off the final 2 balls and Will bowls him - it was drifting down leg, but turned enough to knock him over through the gate…

where were you last Monday then Will, when we needed you?

Looks safe to say Mr Frindall got the front cover right this year. My only worry is that … the Ashes urn is on the back cover!

Hi Sanjoy, congratulations on passing your exam! I can help you out there. Please send your postal address to scorer@dcusa.de and we can forward that to Mr Frindall.
