Brett Lee: in or out?

By Will 5 years ago, at the start of March Add your comment below

Most people, from what I can gather, are keen for Lee to displace someone (Kasper) and return to the Test side. So it’s interesting to read the other side of the coin, this particularly catching my eye:

Technically and temperamentally he is less suited to Test match cricket. He swings the red ball less than he does the white one, both when it is new and later when trying reverse-swing.

His patience and consistency have also been problems in the past, particularly in last summer’s series against India.

I don’t rate him as a quality Test bowler, but that’s not to say I wouldn’t relish the prospect of seeing him play 1 Ashes Test, hopefully one in which Harmison too is on fire…and Vaughan back to his Ashes Best. Even the Aussies would love to see Vaughan back to his 2003 form, pulling McGrath off the front foot and driving Gillespie through the covers.

Will England produce good test wickets. I was at Trent Bridge at 2003 v south africa and I couldn’t believe England produced such a poor wicket. england are better poor wicket players but I hope they produce quality wickets with a bit of bounce and pace.

Traditionally, The Oval (about to post a peice on the ground in a minute) is the fastest in England, but other grounds have got quicker in recent years too. They’ll never be like Perth, or Durban…so long as they’re decent, 5-day wickets that offer as much to batsmen as to bowlers, no one will be complaining
