The Kevin Pietersen factor

I am an Afikaner and a great cricket spectator. I am sitting in the stands at Bloemfontein right now. Kevin just made his first ODI century a few minutes ago.
What a mix of emotions here!!!
Calls of hensopper, rooibaadjie-boetie, verraaier, oorloper ( all references to the Boer war, meaning basically traitor)
But also calls of: “Magtag maar die man kan swaai” meaning he can surely hit a ball.
But i could see every boerenooi (afrikaner woman) thinking “what a man!” and I agree, he is good, very good. And at 24/5 years of age…
Us Afikaners are always arrogant, but theres the foolhardy and the truely gifted.
I think we all agree its sad we couldnt keep him and I can assure you we will coax him back. That the true reason he never did the Gough tatoo.

i just wanna say that ever since i saw kevin pietersen in south africa i have been amazed by his talents. i also think he is the fittest bloke i’ve ever seen, and wud really like to meet him.

i can’t wait to see him in the one-day series against Australia, and hope he can get in to the test series.

Kevin Pietersen is the greatest batsmen it shows becauser he comes from SA. I would relly love to meet him and tell him how much i like him and the great things he is doing of England and the cricket team. you can Kevin is the Beckham in the cricket style.

i hav to admit that KP is a gr8 batsman & i think he is really talented. But i wana see KP doing some bowling coz i heard that hes a really good bowler. Kevin has now got the tattoo of the 3 lions on his arm. i was watching the first day of the 2nd test (the ashes) and i really enjoyed watching KP and Freddie batting together out in the middle.Kevin is not arrogant hes confident. i just wana say that Shane Warne & Brett Lee are my favourite players from the Oz team.

P.S i have to admit that there are alot of young buff south african men but Kevin is the best of them all. :p . Kevin is the fittest member on the England team!

i was watchin the 3rd test at Old Trafford and poor KP he got out for 21 in the first innings and 0 in the 2nd innings by Glenn McGrath! He did drop a catch but i think he still did really wel & im sure he’ll play even beta at Trent Bridge. But iv gota say me being half south african & half english too that its really cool that kev chose to play 4 England and he is doing England proud.

P.S Freddie did sum wkd bowlin’ . KEEP IT UP FREDDIE! lol (Brett Lee is fitt)

I must agree that Kevin Pietersen is one of the most talented cricketers I’ve seen. His partnerships with Andrew Flintoff are explosive and can only get better. His confidence in himself I feel is infectious as the whole of the England side seem to truly believe that this is their year. I truly hope so. I’ve been watching cricket since I was small but have always favoured football but as soon as my Pietersen shirt arrives I think my loyalties may change. Good luck Hampshire in the C & G final! Lets hope Kevin makes them proud in tomorrows match and next week’s test!! How I’d love to see him redeem his catching skills with a stunning catch!!

oh and i think i should add that i 100% agree with Pia, kevin is the hottest player in the world and he is the reason i love cricet.hes tallented with the bat and not so great in the feilding department but only recently, im sure he will do great in the last ashes test!!!!

Yeh man i saw d@…pretty funny! Oh i went 2 KP site n in da news sections day had dis article called ‘freddies yabba dabba dough’. it has pics of KP n Gilo cumin’ out of a nightclub. in one pic KP had almost tripped!!! it was so funny!!!lol! dey drank sumthin’ lyk 34,000 pounds (money) worth of alcohol!!!

Just a suggestion for monique, lauren etc. If you like Kev’s accent, there’s 2 8min interviews with him on BBC’s sport player. (in cricket section oviously) There’s also a kinda funny thing about Freddy’s drunkness, and some good celebration parade stuff garenteed to put a smile on ya face.

Don’t worry I am 100% female, it’s just I’m interested in cricket (which apparently is an old man-ish thing to do- according to me friends) I will only drink beer/lager and not wine and other reasons which I won’t go into.
I’m 17 by the way.
I was actually going to contact him, mainly as a thanks as he was one of the reasons I started watching cricket with my dad (he supports Hampshire), but then fell in love with the game. Yep I’m alive I was just doing some coursework..
I know what you mean about not being quite as happy I thought I would be when I heard they split up.. I’m really not sure why.. hmm.

Personally I like his hair, but anyway like he says it doesn’t make a difference to how well he plays, neither do the earrings. (However I have noticed that 4 of the best players, Freddy, KP, Warney and Clarke all wear earrings… maybe it affects him for the better!)

You can also tell that Kapes isn’t pleased with these comments about him, just look at his face expressions when somone mentions it to him in interviews- he looks hurt. Especially when Boycot mentioned about it.

People seem to think because he goes out to night clubs that he’s trying to be more of a celeb than a cricket star, (I think that’s what Boycot meant, and the hair and earrings are part of this, he thinks that KP just wants to be noticed) but lots of 25 year olds DO go out on a friday night, I go out most friday nights, so when your garenteed to get in anywhere (in particular those posh London clubs) I can complelty understand why he would. I’m sure he would go out whether famous or not but because he is, people notice.

I feel sorry for him, he’s had a hard time from starting cricket
1) Not being allowed into the SA team because of quota systems, so he
2) Moves to England to fufill his dreams- but gets insulted for leaving the country he grew up in.
3) Joined Notts, and got greated by the song ‘never met a nice south african’ so he,
4) Moved to Hampshire – but got critised and pressumed he was leaving Notts for the money.
5) Did very well in one day games for England- But dropped catches in the ashes, then many poeple turned their back on him saying he shouldn’t have taken Thorpe’s place.
6) Proved why he was on the team on the final day of the ashes and have people critise him on his hair and earrings and going back to the whole leaving south africa thing.

Will, 20p?? I assumed you’d get less then that!! It’s cool you work for cricinfo, great job for a cricket fan!! do you get free tickets for games?? and get to meet players?

What I don’t like though is people are actually going into hairdressers asking for a ‘Kevin Pietersen’. I think one of the reasons he has his hair like he does is to be different- having people copy him may be flattering, but also annoying for him.

Will, I’ve been checking your blog since it came up in search for Michael Vaughan articles, and I think your comments are great – really insightful. You’re in the right job . . . It’s fantastic to read the girls’ chat on KP – how well I remember those young days. Now boring, married and with three littlies of my own, I feel very old hearing about these 11, 12 16 year olds. Wow, this really is, to shamelessly steal Will’s words, mind-boggling.

I have been following the Ashes online keenly, but haven’t seen Kevin Pietersen play live yet(trying to watch cricket in the States isn’t exactly easy). There’s no doubt he’s very talented though, and has a lot of potential. I say potential (at the risk of being attacked by Katie, Lauren, Monique and company) because he’s not a cricketing great yet. I look forward to checking out his batting technique. However, his catching needs to improve, and fast! A player who can’t catch (regardless of how well he bats — or looks) doesn’t deserve a place in a national side, much less an international one.

This doesn’t really belong here, but I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while and haven’t found a suitable outlet. I’m a big Graham Thorpe fan, and was extremely appalled at the way he was treated before the Ashes started. This is a man who is an established cricketing great, has stuck with this team through thick and thin (except in his personal life), played a major role in bringing the few fond moments for the English fans during the infertile 90s, and he’s been treated like rubbish. What’s worse is that most of the media was so excited about Pietersen’s inclusion, that Thorpe’s anguish was virtually condoned. Bell should’ve made place for Pietersen, not Thorpe. Who knows, with Thorpe in the side, England might have experienced an unbeaten Ashes series. I just had to get this off my chest.

Will, congratulations on getting a job with Wisden CricInfo. That’s definitely a dream job, and to get that at such an early age…. My, what I wouldn’t give to be in your place. So you must know a lot of the Cricinfo writers, right? Have you met Andrew Miller, Peter English, Sambit Bal, Peter Roebuck (yes, I know he’s not a CricInfo writer)? I’m sure any information that you share about your job will be interesting. What do you do on a daily basis at your job?

The girls posting on this blog seem to have really gone bonkers over Pietersen. (They claim that they really love cricket and he’s just a bonus, but I get the distinct feeling it’s vice versa.) I’m really happy (or made up as my sons tell me) that you girls are all watching plenty cricket cos of KP (and indeed many of you watched it before). What I want to know is, has KP inspired you to play the game and, if you did want to play, do you know where youre local club is?

As far as I am concerned, this is the knock on effect of Ashes success I had hitherto only dreamt of. If it came to a choiced of KP or, say, Wayne Rooney as a role model for my kids I know who I’d prefer.

Kirsty, like Monique said, the world XI is where a group of the best cricketers in the world play the aussies. Freddy and Harmison are playing in the test side, while KP and Freddy are the english players in the one day squad. It starts in October.

Monique, what he meant by ‘concentrating on cricket’ is, I can do better now I’m famous and I’m going to make the most of getting anyone I want in nightclubs. While being able to spend more time on my cricket will be a plus.- what male his age wouldn’t?

Sean, I used to play cricket when I was younger but stopped before I was 13, to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t particually good. Atleast Monique gets to go this week.
I’m off on a geog field trip (sarcastic cheer) from December 17th-24th. I will be in north Devon on CHRISTMAS EVE. Probably standing in a river somwhere, freezing. Then trecking back to Oxford to arrive at 8pm. We all have to go to get our A-level. Costs £300- Can’t wait.

Boys at college claim that they will still be playing cricket in 3 years time, I’ll remind them of that when the next big sporting win happens and they all start playing that- however I like to think atleast some of them will play the game for a long time to come. KP and co. may be youngish now but they’ll need replacing soon enough. By the time the next Ashes in England rolls along, most the current team will be in their thirtys!

I have great admiration for celebrities who try and use their fame for a good cause. Credit to KP for this. Perhaps he is not as self obsessed as I initially thought he was but I’m still far from being convinced entirely. And I still hate the hair style. And the earring. And the tattoo.

I think his hair, the going out, the flirting, the confidence, is just his extovert personality. He came to England with nothing only 5 years ago and must have built up a lot of confidence while trying to get by, making friends, joining notts etc.
If you look at older pics of KP, he came to England with short, dark (normal!) hair, then he grew it when he gained some confidence when joining Hampshire. Then as people started properly taking notice of him and he joined England etc. His confidence grew and his hair became more extravigent. (sp?) -lol guess who took Psychology Alevel! (I could be completly wrong, but it’s just an idea!)

Matt Hayden scored 380 at Perth against Zimbabwe but then Lara overtook it with 400 not out last year (hence the mark two). It was a cricket anorak test; you failed it but Will and I passed with flying colours

What do you suppose KP’s highest test score will end up being? After all his first class record suggests he has it in him to score big hundreds I have a view on this; I think he won’t score many really massive scores (i.e. 250 plus) but I bet he ends up scoring 20+ test centuries. And do you know what? I’m gonna love watching every single one of them.

yeah, he’s been unlucky these past few days.still, he’ll just have to make up for it in pakistan. he’s still an amazing player. so aus have won the ODI’s.but we can still say england must be a brilliant team to have beaten the aussies in that case!!

dave, if KP is going out with KP im more disappointed about the fact that i thought he’d have more class than anything else. CAprice is ugly, and to be brutally honest, a skank. but there we go. each to their own……

Christ, late (bad) decision to go out last night. I managed to stumble through the door past 3 am and had to make the decision whether to stay awake for the cricket or just go to bed. Well, I decided to stay awake. However, I passed out around about 4am and have only just managed to wake up to a hell of a headache. I’ve just got online to catch up on passed play. Oh dear. Agree with you there Sophie, now Flintoff’s just got out, it’s gonna be a Aussie whitewash 3-0.

To be honest, our players haven’t done that well. Well, sad to say but KP hasn’t anway, he hasn’t been a big scorer at all, not the worst, but not the best. Freddy has been one of the better players in the World XI side. That’s hope he’s on top form for the test matches and the World XI win.

I take it back, KP did do well fielding during the ODIs, but I don’t think he batted to his full potential.
But in Pakistan I think he’ll take some catches and have atleast one great batting innings, or quite a few good ones.

How do you think the world will do in the test matches? I think they will win. Freddie will try and make up for the ODI defeat and will do very well- touch wood.
Worked for the Aussies anyway, lost the Ashes, so tried very hard to win in the ODIs. Now the world lost the ODIs, they’ll be more keen to win the tests. Not sure about Harmison, I think if he does well, he’ll do Very well.

What was your dream like Monique?

OK well i was on sum kind of school trip in london and evry person had their own room in this hotel!!!!
so, i was out shopping wif me freinds and wen we got back 2 the hotel i said i was gona put me things in me room so i was walkind down the hall and me phone rang i answered it and it was one of me freinds back in SA so wile i was busy talking i passed my hotel room and went to the one next door so i tried 2 unlock the door and the key got jammed or so i thought!!!!
so i told me freind on the phone that i had 2g becoz the stupid key was stucck and all of a sudden geusse who oppened the door? KP!!!!
so i was like ok no this isnt true im hulusinating!!!!
then he said r u ok??? then i almost fainted but he grabbed me b4 i culd fall!!!!then we stood in the hall chattin 4 bout 10 mins and i said sumfin bout caprice then he said that they were neva 2gethr and he asked me wot else i knew bout him so i told him everything and i said well im probably waisting ur time and he said that i wasnt!! so eventually he invited me inside and introduced me to freedie,shane and michael vaughn!!!!
then afta a hour i finally left it was bout 10:30pm!!!!
the next morning as i woke up i found KP sitting on me bed staring at me!!!!so i stared back @ him(how culd u not?) 4 bout 10 mins then he finally asked me 2 hav dinner with him that night so i said ok (ofcourse).. then he lent over and kissed me and i was like OMG it felt amazing not that i culd realy feel it but still!!!!
then i went 4 a walk outside and we bumped into eachother and he started taking me to the bigben and the thames river and stuff and then the stupid alarm went off!! nooooooooo!!

i kno i should be really, but i’m not bothered that the World XI didn’t win…i love 2 watch Glen Mcgrath and Brett Lee, and i felt that they deserved 2 do well, as every1 knows they r capable of doing better than they did during the summer. it’s great 2 c the aussies r back!! i was sooo willing Brett 2 get his hat-trick (i must b going soft…or insane!!?)

Kirsty, I had my first boyfriend when I was 13/14 (and then the lad didn’t talk to me or even hug me when I asked him to!!) It somhow lasted 2 weeks. Then it was another year and a bit til my 2nd boyfriend which was alright I guess, but nothing special, and it lasted 2months (1month of which I was in Spain!!)
So my first boyfriend I’ve got relly close to is my current boyfriend- and I’m 17! So you have a while yet.
Also I have a friend who is beautiful, really beautifull,inside and out, and she’s NEVER had a boyfriend. Never.
So don’t feel bad, at 11 some of the best lads probably aren’t even intrested in girls (year 7?) In my school people didn’t really start going out with others untill year 9!! I’m sure your not Ugly in any way!

wow monique,mine i must say was really odd. it started off me in this hotel room, it was o weird coz i was pregnant! anyway room service rang me and said that my husband was here. i said bring him up. i looked on my hand and there was a beuatiful wedding ring on it. then there was a knock at the door. i went and answered it and stood there was kevin pietersen. i thought hang on a minute who’s this i thought i was suppose to be meeting my husband. then kp sed hiya sweetheart, how are you and the twins? i was like what? i was pregnant with twins, they i realised what he was on bout, i sed i was fine and how was he, we got talking like married people do. after that he said do you wanna go out for a walk. i said yeah ok, where are we going, he said ah well, that’s a suprise! he took me to this bridge and in the distance was fireworks, he then started hugging me and saying happy anniversary and this is where me and him met. then he started kissing me. we ended up going back to the hotel room and having a glass of champagne! i was soo excited. then i went into labour. i know! omg. after bout 2 hours i had 2 girl twins, kev was so delighted! then i woke up having to be sick. i thought omgosh was it a dream or summit! but i meen pregnant at my age, core blimey! freaky. so how has your day been monique? and i still love kp. luving kp 4eva and eva, love kirsty

On the subject of handsome cricketers, I don’t think there is a contest, on his day, and not on his day, every day of the year, every second of the what ever, Imran Khan is head and shoulders above everyone else. Is you cousin getting treatment? If she’s having help she’s in the best of hands (as people know that she’s suffering) and I’m sure she’ll be fine, it make take a bit of time to get her to a healthy size but she Will be healthy with their help.

Your friend has really bad timing doesn’t she!! But that’s the way of the world, everything comes at once. Is anything happening with you and this guy, or her and this guy?? If you’ve liked him for a long time then she has to understand that you have first choice to be with him! She should also know that she will have to just accept you 2 being together (if you do) and it’s only fair that she doesn’t get with him with out asking you (and you saying yes) first.
If she thinks about it, against your will, then you must talk to her about how it’ll hurt you. If she’s a true friend she’ll value your friendship more then a relationship.

wondering if u guys could help me. this one’s kinda hard to talk over with my school mates.this guy at school likes me a lot, and i like him as well after getting to know him as a friend. he’s asked me out plenty before but i always said no. but now he wants me to go out with him and i want to say yea.i have 5 close friends and 2 of them like him even though he doesnt feel the same way. teh toher BIG problem is that one of my other close friends liked him but then when she told him he was racist towards her, though he apologised later. (see why its getting hard to talk it over with mates) she didnt forgive him. so now there’s serious dislike between those two and my other 2 friends like him. what do u guys reckon?? i should probably ask my friends if they mind. i’d rather have them as friends than the guy as a boyfriend. HELP??? (this site is turning more into an advice site than a cricket blog)

hey monique, my dream was weird. i was out in leeds, where i live and i was with my friends. we went down this alleyway as that is the way we got home. out of the blue came kp, he called me from behind. i turned round straight away as i had recognised his accent. he introduced himslef, and said that he has been waiting for this day to come. he knew who i was and all of that. he said if i didn’t mind would i like 2 go out with him. so easily i accepted, we wnt to this night club. then he said that he really liked me and asked me if i wanted to be his wife! then i woke up after the alarm went off. what a shame! if only dreams came true. ok hun. so what was your dream about hun? kk luv ya. bye

hey girls! how is every1. soz i aint been on my dad has been on sorting summit out 4 me bday. the dream was so weird monique. i must have gone to bed thinking of your dream coz that is where it came from. i was in this really bid house, and i meen really big. i and had been asleep on this kingsize bed. when i woke up, kevin pietersen came in and said, rise and shine hunny, and brought me breakfast in bed! he then gave me this right be kiss on my lips! i know weird. he said when you have finished do you want to go out onto the beach for the day, he said, you know just you and me sitting on the beach watching the horizon. so i agreed instantly. i got changed and got ready. he picked me up literally and carried me down to th beach. he there set up this picnic and rug.as night drew, it started to get chilly. kp could see that i was cold and wrapped his arms around me. later, kevin was literaly holding me. as the moon shone onto the oceam, kp asked me a question. would i marry him! so i said yes straight away, no matter what, i wasn’t letting this relationship slip. then all night long we were on the beach watching the stars. we were spotting if there was any shapes in the stars, weird! then he picked me back up and took me back to the house. it was so romantic. when we got back, kp started saying that he loved me soo much, that he would never let me go. then we started kissing. just at that moment, my alarm went off. why were alarms made? lol. it was soo cool though, i loved every minute of it. if only dreams did come true. so did u have a dream monique? i am going to my auntie’s tinight so i won’t be on for much longer, plz get back to me asap. thanx hun. luv ya. luving kp 4eva and eva, love kirsty
