Rain sucks sometimes. Spoiled a good game at the Gabba as well, though Australia might be happy. The West Indies will feel robbed though, the had Australia 5-43!!

No play at Centurion
By Will 3 years ago, mid-January Leave a comment on this post
Spitting rain, on and off, at Centurion so doesn’t look like there’ll be any play. Cricinfo’s take on it:
Official news from the umpires is that we are lookingat a 15:00
start
That is if the rain does not get back before that
I would put money on the rain beating the players out
Sorry to say, I am off to the bookies to fetch my money, the rain
has won and the covers come back on
Bit dodgy mentioning the Bookies word at this ground isn’t it?…:)

Just reading up on the Aus/Windies match - what a bugger for the West Indies! Not often you have Aus on the ropes…I’ll have to watch the highlights tonight. Still raining in centurion
England won’t mind as much as SA

No relevance, but what’s that quotation from Shaw doing up there? Tcha!

Found that [Shaw’s] quotation in one of my books…unless I’ve got the author wrong Moz?

No, I’ve no doubt that it’s correct. As I recall Shaw also wrote that “The English, not being a spiritual people, invented cricket to give themselves some idea of eternity”. Merely disapproved of its sentiments. Pompous ass Shaw, with no real idea of what the important things in life are…..

Spot on. That 2nd one you cite is also in my database (they load randomly - refresh the page to see more). I’d like to add more so if you have any you want to contribute, feel free! I never got on with Shaw’s work either; I could be wrong, but I think it was he who also wrote something *complimentary* about cricket, or cricket’s followers, which kinda contradicts the quote you mentioned.
By the way, have been meaning to read your comment re South Africa which I’ll get round to when the hangover clears up…
